Your Top Ten List

No Censorship

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately, Slenderman is connected to three tragedies in the news. This fictional character brought to mind a collection of strange entities that came and went at various times in history, some of whom reappeared when the cultural mood was a good fit. What's your top ten list of beings found in relatively modern urban legends?

My List:

Black Eyed Kids

Men In Black

Mad Gassers

Spring-Heeled Jack

Grinning Man

Slenderman

Melonheads

Phantom Clowns

Dream Man (have you dreamed about this man?)

Stick Man

7. Goat Man

9. Werewolfs

10. Big Foot

I put these three in the category of "legendary cryptids", but they can fit into the category of "urban legends" too. I think that one of the three beings on your list is real, though. ;)

The only one I can think of that hasn't already been listed is Bloody Mary.

Some people refer to her as Mary Worth. I wonder if that's a nod to the old comic strip.

That damned bloody mary, gets me every time. 3 or 4 of her and i'm feeling like crap the next morning garaunteed!

On a serious note, how about The Hook? I don't know of too many urban legends but I think that ones pretty classic

That indeed is a classic urban legend. I don't know if he fit my subjective list. I likely would put him and Bloody Mary (not the drink or the queen) in a second list, though. The hitchhiking ghost would be in there too.

The Hook is definitely a classic. My personal favorites are The Clown Statue and The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs.

The parents had a clown fetish? I should have put *them* in my list of strange beings. The babysitter and the man upstairs (not the good Lord) definitely deserve to be in a list of the top ten urban legends. You wonder how many books, movies, television shows, etc. feature variations of that story.

I think that she's in the cryptozoology category. It's all a bit subjective, but these posts are fun to read.

1. Phantom Clowns

I love stories about phantom clowns. They're both creepy and funny at the same time. Evidently, the modern Bozos travel in vans. That means that there are 52 clowns per vehicle. ;)

I think that Bigfoot is a real being of some kind. We all know that werewolves are extinct now. ;)

In no particular order!

10. The Smith Sisters: A story about how two sisters were murdered in the night, in the very room of their younger brother; who had no idea he had any sisters, because their parents covered it up.

9. The Slender Man: You know the drill.

8. Bloody Mary: Chant it three times in a mirror and find out what happens.

7. The Vanishing Hotel Room: A young woman leaves her mother alone in their hotel room on a trip, and when she comes back to the Hotel, she finds neither her room nor her mother...and is told that she arrived there alone.

6. The Russian Sleep Experiment: I thought this one was true but according to this source, it is just a story. Great story, though.

5. Take off your clothes: Apparently, Aladdin tells teenagers to take their clothing off in a subliminal message during the movie.

4. Marilyn Monroe is Tinker Bell: Tinker Bell was supposedly fashioned after Marilyn Monroe.

3. Statue of Limitations: A babysitter is accosted by a clown statue that turns out to be a mass murderer in the house!

2. Three Men and a Ghost: In the movie, people say you can see a ghost boy hiding behind one of the curtains.

And number 1:

Hanging Munchkin: A munchkin killed himself on set and was caught on film! Supposedly, of course, but the video has never been confirmed as true or false.

Phantom hitchhikers, phantom cars (on ghostly hotspots, like some highways).

Thanks for posting that. A few of those urban legends are new to me. I like the "statue of limitations" wordplay, which makes me think of "Marshall Law" and other common mistakes. "For all intensive purposes" comes to mind. :D

Phantom hitchhikers, phantom cars (on ghostly hotspots, like some highways).

We once lived close to a supposedly haunted road. We drove down it one night, and it *looked* like a car disappeared, but it probably turned on a dirt path that was not visible to us at night.

I don't know if this qualifies, but one of my favorite 'legends' is The Mad Gasser of Mattoon.

It's a bizarre story for sure.

Personally speaking, some of the people seen in various Walmart stores are the weirdest things I've ever experienced.

The mad gassers were high on my list. The later variations of Spring-heeled Jack came to mind too.

Personally speaking, some of the people seen in various Walmart stores are the weirdest things I've ever experienced.

I saw a cashier (not at Walmart) with a horn on his head. It almost was impossible to not react to it. It was the shape and size of a baby antler, and the cashier brought Pan to mind. To top it off, he even had an "evil face". That likely was formed during years of gasps and stares, as well as hurtful comments. It obviously was a deformity of some kind, but he really did have an otherworldly vibe. Fortunately, I didn't see his cloven hooves, and he tucked his pointed tail under his jeans. :P I apologize for that childish comment.

The Devil walking at Devon?

Though I would consider most conspiracy theories urban legends: Like the ones in this video.

This thread has morphed from my original intent, but that's *not* a complaint. Thanks for adding a great story.
