Here's a link to this story :

HOKOTA —

Around 150 melon-headed whales, a member of the dolphin family usually found in the deep ocean, beached in Japan on Friday, sparking frantic efforts by locals and the coast guard to save them.

Rescuers were battling to stop the creatures’ skin from drying out as they lay on a beach in Hokota, Ibaraki Prefecture, while some were being carried in slings back toward the ocean.

Television footage showed several animals from the large pod had been badly cut, and many had deep gashes on their skin.

This is an interesting thought Great Old Man. I understand dolphins to be one of the most intelligent mammals in the sea. I'm pretty sure they can sense many things but I'm not sure about any scientific study regarding this yet. They have excellent radar and I believe they can detect changes in gravity and underwater currents so there's a possibly to what you're saying. I'd have to look into this further to be sure though. Nice thought! :tu: I'm sure others here on UM know a lot more than me with regards to this and I'm sure they will be along shortly to tell you what they think :)

Not really a big deal around here. Ibaraki is kind of known for dolphin beachings. There's a few aww's of sympathy, that's about it. Haven't heard a single mention of 3/11 till this thread (don't recall any mass beaching before then either, but like I said, it's not really a big thing here.)

Could this possibly have anything to do with Fukushima?

This has been going on for years, way before Fukushima or the earthquake. Like I said, Ibaraki is known for dolphin beachings. I think I read something about the sand makeup in the area interfering with their sonar or something, but don't quote me on that.

I'm suprised some ambitious whale hunters haven't gotten a quota from the Japan Fisheries Ministry for killing beached dolphins in Ibaraki. I suspect it's because this place isn't as easy to cover up from people as Taiji is. Or is there another reason why melon-headed whales aren't on the menu? Whatever the reason, it's good to see people out there trying to save these 150.

1,938 dolphins in one year? Sounds too optimistic to me.
