Remains of 'slaughtered' Peruvian infants

More than 80 Peruvian skeletons and mummies - including infants who appear to have been killed for ritual reasons - have been found in a spectacular 1,000-year-old tomb.

Belgian archaeologists discovered the find in Pachacamac, about 20 miles south of the capital, Lima.

The 60-foot-long oval chamber was uncovered by a team of archaeologists from the Université libre de Bruxelle.

Inside were a dozen newborn babies and infants, each buried around the perimeter, with their heads pointing towards the tomb.

Nowadays, centuries after the conversion of the Incas by the Catholic Spaniards, the descendents of the Incas use llama foetusses.

When someone builds a(n important) house, a llama foetus gets incorporated into a corner stone of the building.

Centuries ago, that would have been a young child instead.

The kid would first be drugged, and when it fell asleep its head would be smashed in.

And I'll have to add: it was considered a great honour when your kid was chosen to be sacrificed for a new temple.

But that's of course not what the parents really felt...
