I understand what you are saying, and the spirit of your thought is how it should be. Unfortunately, there is a lot of hate and discrimination being directed at those who are homosexual. With that said, when someone of prominence is gay, when they come out in public, it does two things. 1) It gives a shock to the bigots who did look up to said gay person 2) It gives homosexuals a 'champion' (for lack of a better word) against the bigots.
Again, you're correct that it shouldn't matter. You're not correct assuming straight people and gay people are treated equally in the U.S.
