My dilemma .-.  My husband was working recently up in someone attic... He was walking along the beams,  his foot slipped and  he fell clean through the ceiling   into the customer bath lol...Good job the cutomer was not taking a bath at the time, or it would have been a train wreck  !!!.  It was like something  you would see in one of those Carry On Movies  lol  ... the idiot Posted Image..  He Landed on his feet, but I was thinking  what if he landed on his back and got really hurt?

I wonder if there is a such thing as  protective gear to wear  if  a person is working up in someones attic and roof top?  What I mean is..  My husband wears a safety harness and a hard hat while up on the roof tops.. But  in customers  attics.. he only wears his hard hat.. with no chin strap.. ( I have pulled him about that ).

..So, what I was thinking of.. some protective gear that can be worn around the torso.. that  if in the even he falls through someone celing ..and lands on his back, it can cushion his fall and not hurt his back? ...Is there a name for this protective gear  IF it exists?

I pulled him about the hard hat he worse with NO chin strap.. Only because when he went for a burton through the customer celling,  the hat came off and jammed in between two beams ..*shakes head*

Any suggestions?

It might be better to use a safety line, that ties off to a riser (the framework of the roof) and still allows him to walk about...

Rather like a seat belt, if it detects sudden movement (like a fall), it 'locks its gears' and halts the fall, though it would look more like a leash...

I think they make these, and I will do some searches for you if you like...

A quick internet search showed that there are many systems that already exist - though most are usually considered for industrial applications...  Below is a collage taken from a web page that shows various systems for Fall Protection...

I circled the two that I thought might be closest to what you might want...

I have no idea what the cost might be... You would have to contact the companies for that (most just say "Contact Us for Pricing")...  I can't image the cost would be too hideous...

Just do a search on "Fall Protection Safety Lines" and take your pick...

I spoke to my husband  and let him view your post.. He knows what you are talking about and he told me to tell you  thanks and he appreciates your input ... but unfortunately  he says  they are not a practical solution to install in every residential house attic, as he could be entering several a day, every day....  He mentions that they can take long to install and are expensive..... Plus you have the pitfall of being unguarded while trying to install these in the 1st place

His job is TV aerial and satellite installations   .. he works for himself and has been for a long time...He  insists that  he  has never had a fall in  over 15 years of doing the same job...But see  he was a bit too complacent...I think now he knows not to get too confident  lol

Stall the ball... I now showed him the picture you have posted... He said it is not bad.... He likes the one  on the right of the picture.. a retractable safety line...  He is now  thinking about it

Gary wants to know  what site did you get that picture from  with the product you mention.. the retractable safety line?

Thanks in advance.. so far you are most helpful..I think at 1st  Gary imagines you were talking about something  else..

This might be a tough one...

When a person falls they don't always have any control how they land (on their feet - or on their heads) or any control on what's under them (landing half in - half out of an aquarium for example - lots of glass...)

A kevlar vest will help protect against punctures but blunt force trauma (from landing on a railing or some such and hitting your ribs or spine) will still be experienced to some degree...

Having an inflateable vest rather like an auto's airbags might work, but usually they don't inflate until they detect a hit - meaning you've already hit the floor or whatever is beneath you... But they are susceptable to puncture type injuries...

A combination of the two might be somewhat effective, but would be bulky and expensive...

The best way to protect from damage in a fall is to stop the faller from hitting anything, i.e. stop the fall...

Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks for all the info Taun...I will let him look at that link..  He can make up his mind what to do..   He is going to have to pick something to protect him and quit taking chances ..

I know you are not endorsing any product.. you are only helping me out with a  problem.. If Gary buys anything from what you have shown, it would be because he will have researched it himself and made up his own mind  lol.. He usually researches these products before he buys them...

You are most helpful..

That would be a pretty cool thing..

I would imagine though the toughest part would not be getting all three things into one package, but getting something that would properly align the clothes for ironing and then fold them properly, without being bigger than your house...

Might be cheaper to hire someone to do it...  :)

Washer /dryers  break down faster than  separate washers and dryers  ..I know this from  once working in an electrical store that sold many of them...

The thing about washer/ dryers. .. people over loaded them, when you were only supposed to  dry the clothes half load...

Dryers  are usually meant to take creases out of the clothes  ...Well meant to... l ol

You could try one of these, I suppose. But be warned, they are very expensive to maintain and not particularly reknowned for their reliability!

I struggle with woolly jumpers.  I've ruined £40 ones with one wash.. lol.
That "dry flat" on the label confuses me.  Are you supposed to leave jumpers and cardigans laying flat on grills all over the back garden?
lol
