Hearing your name called

Have you ever heard a voice called by someone who wasn't there? By someone who couldn't be there?

The other night I was sitting in my living room on the couch, I heard footsteps coming down the hallway which runs behind the wall which the couch rests up against. I figured it was my wife getting some water and didn't think anything of it until I very clearly heard my father's voice saying my name from around the corner. My father lives in California and I haven't spoken to him in almost a year and yet there was his voice, his very distinct voice in my apartment. I jumped up and ran to the hallway and into my room and all I saw was my wife alseep on our bed.

Has anyone else had something like this happen?

I have had occasions when, while I am sleeping I hear my name being called so clearly and loudly that I awaken. This is not in the context of any dream, but just a voice I hear "in my head" - and curiously it is always the same, distinctive female voice.

I don't know whose voice it is I am 'remembering' when that happens but I am convinced this is a form of auditory hallucination. I also suspect this can happen not only when the subject is asleep, but in any state of (mental) relaxation.

Perhaps your experience was something similar - a 'half-remembered memory' that surfaced in your mind while it was relaxed?

And welcome to UM, btw. Nice to have you here and hope you enjoy being here.

Yup,

Used to hear my Mam call my name out loud sometimes when she clearly was not there (I live alone). Normally happens when I'm in a very relaxed state, almost dropping off for a snooze or when I'm exhausted (sometimes from partying to hard). The calling of my name is loud enough to startle me. I believe it to be possibly related to 'sleep paralysis'.

Around those times I would sometimes here intricate music when I was having a shower, like a chorus of Angels singing something beautiful I find hard to explain.

Or on another level, unless there is some profound reason you do not speak to your father, maybe it is your subconscious thinking it is time to speak?

Yep, I've also heard my name called when sleepy or sleep deprived, or on the last occasion, very loud thumping on my door - I had just gone to bed, did not feel especially sleepy, and didn't think I had nodded off, yet when I leaped up and checked, no-one was there (and my place and garden is such that if anyone had been there, I would see them even if they ran fast!)

I also like George's surmise...

I have heard my name being called a couple of times.....mostly when I'm just dozing off......or just before waking up.

It sounded like my mothers voice on those occasions...yes, she is still with us.

I put it down to a subconscious thing - even so, it can be rather startling when it happens.

I usually then, give her a call, to see if she's ok.

It's weird.

I have only had one very clear hallucination that was many years ago.

I had been awake for almost 48 hours I came home walked up the stairs my father read the newspaper and said hi to me and my cat walked past me in the hall on my way to the toilet.

When I sat there I realized wtf the cat has been dead for 3 years and my parents are on vacation,

I decided that I needed to sleep immediatly I went to my room and didn't even bother taking my clothes of.

Strange things happens when you are exhausted,

Yeah, It was a few months ago, I was up late but I wasn't tired or anything, Other half was asleep upstairs, I went into the kitchen to make a cuppa and I heard someone call my name, Sounded like it came from the front room but I couldn't be sure, Sounded like a female voice to me . A couple of nights later my other half told me he thought he'd heard someone calling his name the same night as he was trying to get to sleep.

I have a friend who is into all sorts of Paranormal Stuff and her mother claims to be a Psychic. (I say "claims" not out of disrespect, but because I have never personally had a reading from her so I cannot say whether she is, or not. I can say that she has a large clientele who believe in her.) Anyway, my friends mom says that if you ever hear your name being called it's not usually a good entity, because if was the ghost of someone you know, they wouldn't have to use your name, they already know your name.

What does this mean?

That's an interesting take on the name calling, but the second part is a bit confusing to me.

To OP: I've heard disembodied names called. I attribute it to distorted sounds of a vehicle or normal house sounds from fans or what not.

:)

No desrespect to anyone's opinion but I'm not talking about falling asleep or waking up and I'm not talking about a whisper...I'm talking about being wide awake (unless I was dreaming about being awake which I suppose is possible in a terrifying, matrix kind of way) and hearing my name, in a clear plain voice, calling me from down my hallway.

I apologize if I sounded bad. I didn't mean too. I was curious what woodsbooger meant.

I thought it'd be rude if I didn't comment to you since it's your thread.

I understand what you mean by your name being called. I expect it was a curious and somewhat unsettling thing to experience. Thanks for sharing it with us.

No no no I'm sorry if that came off like I was chiding! Not at all! I was simply making it clear that it wasn't a product of sleep at all.

Hey there Flynn.

In answer to this - it doesn't have to be. The brain can slip into "neutral" without us falling asleep. The situation you described seems to be quite suitable for your brain to 'relax'. Although you don't give a lot of detail as to what you were doing, you do state it was night and you were sitting on your couch - that seems quite relaxing.

I suffer from ADD and anxiety for "relaxed" isn't exactly how I would discribe my mind.

I've been awake and somewhere other than in my home when I've heard my name called... a few times. The sound was clear but I never recognized any specific voice. It was always Sue and never Susan. Could have been wind or any number of things that make noise and just sounded like my name.

This has happened to me pretty often.... I never recognize it as any specific person's voice, and it's usually as I'm falling asleep I hear either my name yelled or a booming sound like there was a nearby explosion. It always startles me and then it takes me a while to fall alseep.

i've known people that take ADD meds and coincedently they have related many a paranormal story to me.

i would think that stimulating the CNS would cause some abnormalities in perception.

Then again, what do i know? :)

Either way, cool story.

Thanks for sharing and welcome to UM.

I too suffer from a moderate-to-severe anxiety condition. That doesn't mean my mind is always "on guard".

I'm fairly open-minded about whether the paranormal exists, but I also think we should accept reasonable mundane explanations when they exist. At the end of the day, however, acceptance is a personal choice and I'm not going to brow-beat someone who strongly believes something.

Same thing happened to me accept it wasn't a voice I recognized, I heard it while I was locked in my room coming from outside and when i walked out I saw my entire family sitting there just watching tv and I asked who just called my name and they said nobody they weren't even speaking either

For the record I have ADD and anxiety issues as well. It wasn't scary and at no point did i think it was paranormal or anything like that, it was just a big mind****

Yes I used to work in a Chinese restaurant where it would happen. It was an old building family run which the workers stayed upstairs half the week. Our dishwasher had recently died. I have a pretty unique name so this first time I heard it come from the back room really loud and clear I peeked back to see who it was. There was one table back there near where I heard it, a family that wouldn't know my name and they were looking at me like why are you looking at us so I kept going. The next time was at night and I was alone so it was weirder. I told another waitress that had been there longer and she said it had happened to her a few times there too and she was already convinced it was haunted.

That's happend to me twice & one other time my room mate freaked out for seemingly no reason & she asks me if I heard that but I didn't hear a thing & she tells me she heard a very loud growl but I didn't think anything of it until later that night, I was in bed lying on my stomach & right behind my head I heard it, I could feel it reverberating on the back of my neck, it was so loud everyone in the house should've heard it.

Edit: Holy crap right after I replied to this I went to the bathroom & while I was in there I heard my mothers voice call my name clear as day & she swears she didn't say anything.

I've experienced it myself, always whilst wide awake. Sometimes it will be voices of deceased relatives, other times voices that just erupt from nowhere. Beyond the pitch that a human could create.

On each occasion you can perceive where the sound came from. It's not like a voice that's in your head.

Last year I was recording audio for a youtube video. I got up to feed my cat, as I started to pet her a deep voice came from the center of the room.

It was so loud that the cat and I both looked in the direction that it came from. A couple of minutes later, I realized that I had left the microphone on.

I added the clip to one of my update videos, The voice picked up can be heard at 1:25

While it's true that some of these voices are nothing more than auditory hallucinations, some seem to have a much more of a paranormal explanation for them.

Around the time that I recorded this, we had a spate of paranormal activity after my neighbor started doing DIY.

Voices would emerge out of nowhere and whispering could be heard in rooms that were empty.

I've had various encounters with the same voice heard in that clip over the past year, It turns up sporadically, Usually giving a groan before disappearing for a few months.

The first time I heard it was in January of last year, I was standing in the bathroom doing my business. Thinking about the day ahead, when over my right shoulder I heard "b******!"

I'm kinda used to these kind of things now, however it is startling when they first start to happen.

Yeah, I've had this happen when I was sleepy or really out of it. I've not thought much of it since it only seems to happen at times when my mental state is less than optimal.
