NASA Ames Launches Smartphone Upgrade and CubeSat Aboard Orbital Rocket

NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, will launch a variety of experiments into space aboard NASA's second commercial cargo resupply flight of the Orbital Sciences Corporation Cygnus spacecraft to the International Space Station. These experiments include free-flying robots equipped with a smartphone and a small satellite with a de-orbiting device, called an "exo-brake."

Orbital Sciences' Second Mission Delivers Delights to Space Station

Satellites, Girl Scouts and good ole Charlie Brown highlight Orbital Sciences Corporation’s second commercial resupply voyage to the International Space Station. The mission, Orbital-2, will both deliver new scientific investigations to the space station, as well as help build upon and expand prior studies.

The launch of Orbital's Antares rocket is planned for July 12 from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport's Pad 0A at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in eastern Virginia. Antares is schedule to deliver the Cygnus spacecraft to the space station on July 15.

Orb-2's Antares Rolls Out to Launch Pad (Time-Lapse)

This time-lapse video shows the roll out of the Orbital Sciences Corporation Antares rocket, with the Cygnus spacecraft aboard, from the Horizontal Integration Facility to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport's Launch Pad 0A at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

The roughly half-mile roll out began shortly after 4 a.m. on July 10, 2014. Arrival at the pad was about an hour later.

The launch to the International Space Station in scheduled for 1:14 p.m. EDT on Saturday, July 12.

Cygnus is filled with about 3,300 pounds of supplies for the station, including science experiments to expand the research capability of the Expedition 40 crew, crew provisions, spare parts and experiment hardware.

Pre-launch Activities Complete for Supply Mission to ISS

Orbital Sciences Corporation has completed pre-launch processing and rollout of its Antares rocket and Cygnus cargo craft at Wallops Flight Facility. Launch opportunities for the Orbital-2 mission to the International Space Station begin July 12. Orb-2 is the company's second operational resupply mission to the ISS under its Commercial Resupply Services contract with NASA. The Cygnus spacecraft is delivering almost 33-hundred pounds of cargo, including science experiments to expand the research capability of the Expedition 40 crew onboard the station.

Orbital-2 Launch Coverage

Orbital Sciences Corp. has postponed the launch of its Cygnus cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station until 12:52 p.m. EDT on Sunday, July 13, from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport’s Pad 0A at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. Severe weather in the Wallops area has repeatedly interrupted Orbital’s operations schedule leading up to the launch.
