Do video games make people violent?

First of all, I don't agree with the article. In fact I love vídeo games. But at the same time, I like share news :D

The findings were released by the American Psychological Association.

It set up a taskforce that reviewed hundreds of studies and papers published between 2005 and 2013.

The American Psychological Association concluded while there was "no single risk factor" to blame for aggression, violent video games did contribute.

"The research demonstrates a consistent relation between violent video game use and increases in aggressive behaviour, aggressive cognitions and aggressive affect, and decreases in pro-social behaviour, empathy and sensitivity to aggression," said the report.

Video games don't make people violent - lag makes people violent.

No, but people make violent video games. The Roman Empire didn't have video games but it doesn't seem to have slowed them down any.

After playing all of the GTA games, Battlefield series, COD, Left for dead etc etc, if this article was correct I should be Ted Bundy but alas I'm not :gun:

With games like Postal and Hatred that I've been playing. Especially the Quake, Doom, and Blood series. I should be a raving psychopath. Yet I'm not. I keep feeling like these studies are in some way an excuse for naturally violent people. Don't blame them, blame the game.

worth quoting, from the article itself:

However, a large group of academics said they felt the methodology of the research was deeply flawed as a significant part of material included in the study had not been subjected to peer review.

that's a big red flag.

IMO, the only way video games 'make people violent' is if there was something in their psyche that was triggered. That being said, there can be many kinds of triggers. They don't have to be video games. Also, letting little children play these extremely violent games desensitizes children to real violence. Children who are too young to differentiate between reality and fantasy in no way should be playing these kinds of games.

Do not hate the noob for you were one once. Instead take the noob under your wing. For doing so will create a worth while teammate.

Welp, I remember playing games such as Resident Evil 2, Doom, etc... when I was in elementary school, but I turned out just fine.

Now who wants to help me hide a body?

No external stimuli is going to affect all people the same way. Ted Bundy said porn was partially responsible for his desire to murder young women. Given the availability of porn, mass murder of college girls should be off the charts, but it's not. Violent movies affect some people like the Joker killer in the movie theater, yet millions watch them and don't go nuts and kill strangers. No doubt some will be affected adversely by violent video games, but I suspect they may already be in trouble mentally. These forms of stimuli do have the negative effect of desensitizing us to sex/lust over meaningful relationships and to violence rather than empathy toward other people. It's hard to regulate such things in and open society and unfortunately young children are exposed whether people believe it or not. Perhaps we need to be more observant to others who are obsessed with them and speak up where necessary.

I must confess I've had violent feelings toward the makers of crappy video games after paying for and playing them.

GTA V is fun so why should it (as an example) be made illegal? If someone is going to allow themselves to obsess over beating prostitutes to death or going on trigger happy sprees then the problem is with them not the computer game. Its like saying lets make swing parks illegal because their is a segment of the population who obsesses over youngsters. I think maybe society needs to move on from the 30s and 40s so it can take a fresh look at eugenics. The obsessive people are what make up 99% of all criminals and mentally ill.

It should be more a case of violent people are likely to enjoy violent video games. Same as rapists are likely to enjoy pornography.

However, it does not follow that people who play violent video games are violent people, nor that people who watch porn are rapists.

I played a lot of river raid as a kid, I've never flown a jet.

I played a lot of bionic commando, I've never swung around rappelling from building to building

I played a lot of Curse of Azure Bonds, I awoke with mysterious tattoos embroiled in a nation spanning conspiracy

I played a lot of Black Tiger, I don't know how to use a morning star

I played a lot of Half Life, I've never escaped a research facility, never shot anyone, never used a crowbar on anyone

I played a lot of Ninja Gaiden, I'm not a ninja
