What about the Black Dogs of the British Isles?

These huge, ghostly black dogs have been seen by travellers for centuries. But are they counted as ghostly, or cryptozoological?

I've heard of tons of different anomalous animals, but far and away the most intriguing to me are the lake monsters, which have appeared across the globe. Some of my favorite land dwellers include the Congolese Mokele-M'bembe, the Floridaskunk ape, the South African, lizard-like creatures known as the Intulo and the West Virginia Mothman, although there are many who would contend that this creature is more ethereal and less cryptozoological! disgust.gif

The Beast of Gévaudan has always been one of my favorite cryptids!

user posted image

Beast of Gévaudan : was described as being a huge wolf-like beast, which killed its victims 'by savagely tearing out their throats before devouring their bodies or simply ripping them apart'.  The beast came to public attention between June 1764 and June 1767 when a large number of murders (mainly women and children) occurred in Gévaudan, a place situated in the district of Lozère in south-eastern France.

In February 1765 King Louis XV sent a famous hunter called Denneval into Gévaudan with six highly trained bloodhounds to try to track down the creature.  Unfortunately they did not succeed.  However after two large wolves were killed in the area the murders finally ceased.  However there are some who believe that the beast was more than just a bloodthirsty rabid wolf.  In the book La Bête du Gévaudan a man called Gerald Menatory suggested that the killings may have been the work of one or a number of serial killers using the reports of man-killing wolves to cover their tracks.  There has even been the suggestion that the beast was actually a werewolf.

I've yet to see the film: "The Brotherhood of the Wolf", which I hear was loosly based on the actual events in Gévaudan, but I think the gist of the plot that the beast was a wild African lion! I'm not sure if that was the case, but there were rumors that the beast was actually an escapee from King Louis' bestiary... has anyone else hear these rumors?

My Great-Grandfather used to tell me stories about a snake-like creature that was killed in Arkansas in the early 1900's. He said there was a picture of it in the newsaper, and that it was covered with hair and had four legs. I think he said it was about 10-12 feet long. There was more but it has been nearly 20 years since he died, so I don't remember much.

When thinking of cryptozoolgy, dont forget to think about the animals that have been proven to exist despite sceptics statement that the animals are fake such as the Mountain Gorillia, Okapi, Komodo Dragon ext . . . these animals give us hope that new speices do exist and I always include them in with my lists of cryptozoological beings.

i once read a very good article on classification fo cryptids . i beleiv eit went something like this:

type 1 - animals that have not been proven to exist (nessie, sasquatch)

type 2 - animals that have been proven to exist, but very little is known about (goblin shark, spiderleg crabs)

type 3 - animals that exist, but posess traits not common to others of their type(two headed goat, five legged dog)

type 4 - animals that exist, but either are anchient and not understood, or posess traits inherent to anchient animals (hoseshoe crab, colecanth)

not sure thats it, but im trying to find the source i read it from.

Hey Byuu94 about those black panthers do you have a site on those or do you know if they have been sited in florida. My aunt swears she has seen one and i don't believe her.

i can assure you she has not. black panthers are actually melanistic leopards, like those in africa, which, regardless of color, do not live in florida. unless it happened to escape from the zoo.

Rakshasas to me arent really cryptozoological creatures. They are or were just little "demons." But they have since been killed off.

Perhaps they never existed in the first place. original.gif
