Welcome Back, Congress

A bit of news from the Sunlight Foundation:

The House and Senate worked more days in 2009 than they have in any year since 1995, when the Republican party took control of both houses of Congress. This only became clear after reviewing data contained in a recently released report on congressional activity [PDF], which provides a wealth of statistics. Among the highlights:

  • Last year, the Senate met for 191 days, and the House met for 159 days. Total time in session was 1,420 and 1,247 hours, respectively.
  • More than 9,071 measures were introduced, of which 1,444 passed.
  • Looking strictly at non-military nominations, 89% (or 3,222) nominations were confirmed; 4% (126) remain unconfirmed; and 0.4% (15) were withdrawn. Overall, the Senate received 24,951 nominations and confirmed 23,051.

They have a small window of time now to make a difference.

They would be dumb if they didn't take it.

Wait... they worked 191 days out of 365?

My god, the poor kittens. We'd better give them a pay rise for all that hard work.

With an approval rating of 25% Gallup more than two-thirds of Americans (69%) continue to disapprove of the job Congress is doing.

Well done Congress

Indeed. They must be absolutely exhausted from all their hard work.

No, I expect them to work 5 days a week, maybe 40 weeks (200 days then) with the other 165 broken up into "in their community" and "actual holiday".

They get paid a ludicrous amount, so really they need to earn it.

The OP doesn't say they only worked 191 days but that they met for a total of 191 days. On the times when there is no meetings they are preparing for meetings or doing other various work.

so 365 days less weekends is about 260 days less holidays is about 250 days. so that leaves 50-60 days for meeting with constituants in their home state, tRAVEL, and other work. posters here are up in arms about what they do not understand. as usual. it sounds good on rush limbuagh or beck until you analyze how the governement works.

Yeah people do not read, it's right there in the OP. However when people apply their bias presumptions "Congress met 191 days" becomes "Congress only worked 191 days".

It's like this whole forum section has deluded itself into only seeing what it wants and ignoring everything else.Because so much bullpoo piles up so quickly nobody can call anybody on the bullpoo because there's to much of it to catch up to. It's a mess of logical fallacies and egos...however it is funny!

Never before in history has the american government worked as quickly as they are to destroy the free-market capitalistic system that america was built upon.

Never before in history.

And to think some here and everywhere applaud this criminal and treasonist behavior - with fake balsamic smiles and quiche eating grins.

Your country hasn't changed for the better - as some claim - its changed the very fundimental principles this great nation was envied for!

The article reeks of spin.... the spin being that the government is working hard - in hard times.

LOL.... does america know how to work hard anymore?.... without an industrial base?

All people in america/western nations do is sell **** to each other that is imported from other countries.

How the hell can most people consider their job hard? ... what!?... because YOU have to spend 15-45 minutes in traffic to get to your sales or cleric job?

This is the biggest problem in america.... kids a born everyday and raised as video gamers who think simply showing up for work is their job duty.

If you are offended its probably because YOU are at WORK right now reading this.

Only in America/western nations... the place where a person can buy a used vehicle for $50 - but need over $1000 to insure it.

---only in america/western nations.... place for westerners, video gamers and chicken hawks.

Out of curiosity, are you familiar with 20th century American history at all?
