Although there is no mention of Godzilla (except for comments), it's still an interesting article.

At the end of Katsuhiro Otomo’s dystopian Japanese anime film Akira, a throbbing, white mass

. Eventually, its swirling winds engulf the metropolis, swallowing it whole and leaving a skeleton of a city in its wake.

Akira and Grave of the Fireflies were the first two to pop into my mind. Hell, war scarred them greatly including fearing militarism and disbanding their army.

FF Spirit Within dealing with the out of control military and Apple Seed shows us Masamune's vision of a police state after the war, even Ghost in the Shell is set after the "Last War".

But Robotech warns us about using other magic fuel sources, the protoculture bringing tides of different alien invaders. And lets not forget including cuteness with death such as the skull mushroom clouds seen in Puni puni poemy.

And now we have the rise of more and more military themed anime/manga. KanColle, Strike Witches, Gate, Zipang, Those who hunt elves (remember the sniper HS that drove the kitten haunted main battle tank) and Cat **** One the list goes on. Japan is a very unique place with a very long and strange history (Sengoku Jidai anyone?). And it is as of now, the only country in the world that has had atomic weapons used against it in war.

Gods, yes. The huge chunk of what anime I've seen involves some sort post-apocalyptic setting or impending catastrophe, including Naruto and One Piece. It's a popular theme in manga too and there's a whole subset of guro manga devoted to The End Of The World in one form or another.

Metropolis (2001) wiki link

Metropolis (メトロポリス Metoroporisu?) is a 2001 anime film loosely based on the 1949 Metropolis manga created by Osamu Tezuka, itself inspired by the 1927 German silent film of the same name, though the two do not share plot elements. The anime, however, does draw aspects of its storyline directly from the 1927 film. The anime had an all-star production team, including renowned anime director Rintaro, Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo as script writer, and animation by Madhouse with conceptual support from Tezuka Productions.
