Then the inevitable happened: The meeting broke up. And since then, bickering has dominated the proceedings, particularly relating to the question regarding who is to blame for the breakdown of the talks.

it wasnt a good deal for the UK. as seen by the backlash from MP's. plus such a deal would have threw a spanner in the works when it comes to dealing with the US. im pleased the deal as come to a end.   good news.

Depends, now lets see how many tax billions are needed to bail out BAE.

just because you wanted the european EADS to merge with the UK BAE, and create a super arms manufacture. but because the deal as broke down, which means the BAE UK / USA relationship will continue. over the proposed merger, you have been stung. if we need to bailout BAE it will be worth it to keep it from the clutches of the EU. as the yanks agree.

Meanwhile Boeing is chuckling.  EADS recently announced the opening of a new manufacturing facility in my hometown.  They will be building mid sized passenger aircraft.  It's been a real shot in the arm for the local economy and it was also a chance for us locals to give Boeing the finger after they dumped us for a plant in a non- "right to work" State.  IOW the unions screwed us out of a Boeing plant but EADS came in and took the facility anyway....

Could you provide a Link to this news please? I seem to have missed any aircraft assembly in the UK being performed by EADS / Airbus. I only know of Broughton and Filton (not assembling aircraft).

Back on topic: the deal will finally have to be agreed or dismissed tomorrow (wednesday).

Good it is bad enough with BAE fleecing the UK tax payers for their rubbish goods.  EAD who are largely owned by the French and German Government thought they could cut themselves a slice on the British taxpayers pie.

The Government demanded that the new chief executive of the defence division of a merged BAE-EADS aerospace giant should be British “in perpetuity”, in a move that is believed to have increased tensions with Germany.


Ian King, the chief executive of BAE Systems, revealed that the agreement was one of the UK’s national security “red lines” on the £28bn deal, which collapsed last week. George Osborne, the Chancellor, said Germany “vetoed” the deal over how much influence it would have over the new global business.


“It would have been run by a Brit. Forever, a Brit,” Mr King revealed, saying that the post would have been based in the UK, along with the chief financial officer.


He said BAE was known as “the avenger” in Germany, a phrase he said was used critically in the country.
