Neo2005 Posted July 1, 2005 #3 Share Posted July 1, 2005 The fine print sounds like a joke. "The Flat Earth Society is not in any way responsible for the failure of the French to repel the Germans at the Maginot Line during WWII. Nor is the Flat Earth Society responsible for the recent yeti sightings outside the Vatican, or for the unfortunate enslavement of the Nabisco Inc. factory employees by a rogue hamster insurrectionist group. Furthermore, we are not responsible for the loss of one or more of the following, which may possibly occur as the result of exposing one's self to the dogmatic and dangerously subversive statements made within: life, limb, vision, Francois Mitterand, hearing, taste, smell, touch, thumb, Aunt Mildred, citizenship, spleen, bedrock, cloves, I Love Lucy reruns, toaster, pine derby racer, toy duck, antelope, horseradish, prosthetic ankle, double-cheeseburger, tin foil, limestone, watermelon-scented air freshner, sanity, paprika, German to Pig Latin dictionary, dish towel, pet Chihuahua, pogo stick, Golf Digest subscription, floor tile, upper torso or halibut"
kikuchiyo Posted July 1, 2005 #4 Share Posted July 1, 2005 (edited) Wow I just read some of ther arguments...and indeed they are a fun bunch. I mean it may sound crazy but they are the proof that there is and always will be people out there defying the common knowledge, although they are scientificly wrong they stand by it. That's a great quality, maybe not the best but a good one none the less. ( I mean really it's like the guru experiment. fun.) mishalee Posted July 1, 2005 #10 Share Posted July 1, 2005 What idiots. Are they blind? They've seen pics of the Earth with their own eyes, its spherical. Mr Ed Posted July 1, 2005 #12 Share Posted July 1, 2005 It is such a shame that such a large, complex theory can be destroyed by a snapshot of the Earth from space.
Blackleaf Posted July 1, 2005 #13 Share Posted July 1, 2005 (edited) I think it was Galileo who realised that the Earth was a spheroid, but not a perfect sphere, by studing solar eclipses. He noticed that everytime the Moon passed in front of the Sun, it was always a perfect disc. If the Moon was flat, sometimes it would appear as sausage-shaped when it passed in front of the Sun. And the Sun itself also wouldn't always appear as a circle in the sky. Edited July 1, 2005 by Blackleaf

theSOURCE Posted July 1, 2005 #18 Share Posted July 1, 2005 I posted my theory several years ago on this forum to explain how the Earth can indeed be flat. I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by posting this again. Picture the Earth as a flat, round surface. The universe (space-time) exists as a dome, or half bubble, above this surface. All of the celestial bodies -- sun, moon, planets, stars, etc. -- travel in a straight line above the surface of the Earth at varying distances. All of these objects are also smaller than they appear to be. The reason these objects "look" to be traveling in a circular orbit is because of the illusion created by the distortion of the fabric of space. Since space is "stretched" further at the center of the dome than it is closer to the edges, this creates the effect known as space-time dilation. It is similar to the effect caused by traveling at near relativistic speeds. This also explains the illusion that the earth is sphere shaped. The vision of an astronaut in space would be affected by this space-time dilation. The Earth below him/her would appear larger, and therefore, curving towards him/her, while the areas of the Earth that are further away are contracted, and look to him/her as if they are curving away. This would also have the same effect on any camera or video equipment. It is the effect of stretched space-time that also gives us the illusion of a horizon, and why the sun and moon "seem" to rise and set. To explain the apparent orbit of the celestial bodies, I'll use the moon for an example. Remember that the moon is traveling in a straight line above the Earth. It would seem that the moon would only cross once, then disappear for good. The point to remember, however, is that there is no "outside" beyond the confines of the universe. Any object reaching it's apparent edge would simply reappear at the opposite side. This explains why the moon "seems" to be orbiting the Earth. This also describes what happens to any ship or aircraft. It simply exits at one edge, and reappears at the opposite edge, again giving the illusion that the world is sphere shaped. Now, if anyone finds this theory plausible in any way, I have some fine swamp land for sale you may be interested in.....
