Disturbing experience from college.

Hello! This is my first post here but I've been a long time lurker!

This happened to me in college. I was in my senior year and living alone on the top floor of my dormitory.

I had gotten back from a late night study session with my friends. I tried to go to bed as we were going to go out the next morning.

I was not able to fall asleep and kept tossing and turning. Then all of a sudden I felt this horrible fear pass through me. Please note I was wide awake at the time.

It was the worst fear I had ever felt. I can't even begin to describe it but I was frozen stiff for a good five minutes. Even talking about it right now is making my heart pound.

I was doing very well in college. No reason to be scared of anything. Nothing stressful going on during or prior to this.

I felt as though I was in the presence of something pure evil. That was what my gut instinct was. It was that someone or something very bad was nearby. Of course it was a quiet night and was around 4am so no one was outside.

I don't know why my gut kept telling me that something evil was there but I kept quiet and stayed in my dorm room.

I stayed up the whole night and was quite shaken afterwards.

I don't think it was a panic attack (as I've had some during my time at college) as it felt different.

I really can't explain it. I told my mom about it and instead of writing it off as a panic attack or stress she surprisingly agreed with me noting that I was very sensitive to supernatural things as a child.

I am and was in sound mental health and physical health.

I've only been able to come up with it being some kind of different panic attack as far a logic goes.

What I would like to hear is any supernatural explanation for this as I have had enough with trying to solve this logically.

What could I have sensed? Nothing bad happened and it's been years now.

Thanks for reading!

It's a demon.

These demons are from Satan and all you have to do is to chant Jesus name and those demons will disappear because demons are usually afraid of Jesus. And ghosts are actually demons in disguise.

I quoted this answer below from Answerbag.

"Yes ghosts ARE Demons or fallen angels. I know first hand. They want to fool you into believing that when you die you become a spirit that walks around aimlessly, but what they are really trying to do is make you seek them so that they can infect your life and ultimately keep you away from God.

Jillaman - interesting episode. I wonder if it could have been caffeine-induced? I had a similar frightening experience in my college days that occurred after a late night talk session. I was under the usual stresses from school, work, lack of sleep, etc. After probably 4-5 cups of coffee I was on my way home when I got slammed by a full-blown schizophrenic episode: voices, panic, hallucinations. It was terrifying; fortunately it only lasted about two hours. I've never had another episode since.

Not really sure about demons although that would be the best explanation for it being supernatural.

As far as panic attacks go, it didn't feel like one.

Caffeine could be a very plausible explanation. We had our study session at dunkin donuts and I was downing iced coffees left and right. :)

I agree with some of what TruthSeekingSoul mentioned, seeing as how my episode ended when two Christian friends prayed with me. I'm not comfortable blaming demons for my particular experience that night, because I believe it was stress-related and made worse by the amount of caffeine I had that night, though I'm willing to consider other interpretations.

Just for a point of interest:

Is that dorm still in existance? Or has it been razed?

Sounds like textbook sleep paralysis to me.

Have you ever visited a sleep center or talked with a doctor about it?

College can put stress on people that they have never experienced before, while I can't say what it was for sure I can say that if you continues then take Rafter's advise and see a doctor.

As compared to the Jesus demons...

Yes... A text book case of sleep parslysis, its not uncommon. No need to see a doctor or sleep specialist for an isolated incident thoug. Usually only if its chronic.

I know for a fact it wasn't sleep paralysis. I was wide awake at the time. In fact I had just rolled over in an attempt to get comfy moments before it happened.

I'm thinking it was stress or caffeine induced.

If it was supernatural a demon could have been the culprit.

My college was founded in 1812. Not sure how long the dorm has been there. People say our campus one haunted.

There's also an infamous small sorority said to be involved in the supernatural that was housed in the dorm at the time of the incident. People told stories of how when they lived near that sorority strange things would happen like bruising and welts on multiple people but some people being untouched and quarters falling from the ceiling. Strange stuff! I never really liked that sorority. Mean girls. :)

Oh! I have had sleep paralysis before though! That is absolutely terrifying! I cried when it happened the first time. It only happens when I'm laying on my back or side though so at the time I was in college I was always vigilant about sleeping on my stomach and still am today! :) No paralysis since doing that. Watch me jinx myself now.

It sounds like you were in the presence of evil. I don't like to use the word "Demon" because it's easily associated with something evil and not all demons are evil according to "myth" history. Very interesting!

That was what my instincts were telling me at the time as well and I wouldn't classify it as a demon either as it just felt pure evil. I almost wonder, could it have been a person or someone committing an act of evil? A wave of evil energy left over by some awful event? Never felt it after that night and I hope never to feel it again.

Most reasonable explanation in my opinion

It is also possible you might've picked up a feeling of panic from one of your roommates?

Maybe it depends on your time there. If you are still in college, ask your friends if they've felt similar to you.

If I wasn't awake at the time I would have concluded sleep paralysis as well. I was wide awake. I should have worded my post better. I was too scared to move. Not that I couldn't move. :)

I had no room mates and had my own bathroom as well. I could have been picking up on someone else in the dorm though perhaps.

That would make sense as well. I get that all the time but have never been scared by it so that could be it. Thanks!

Sugar and caffeine. Powerful, powerful stuff when taken in quantity and used recklessly.

Panic attacks are very common with college students.

Was going to say that my first panic attacks started when I was in college. All the stress of childhood never resolved, a new place far from home, difficult classes, crappy living conditions and just being adolescent and turbulent still. Had my first one in "Ancient Civilizations" class. Scared the heck out of me. Years later and lots of therapy and they only come once in awhile now. Some people get lucky and have a lot of support. I wasn't one of those people. The OP may not be either and might want to consider counseling before a demonologist. Though I won't write that off totally either.

Well I'm passed college now for better or worse. I'm on medication for anxiety now and that helps with panic attacks. Though what I felt that night didn't rightly feel like a panic attack could have been the caffeine though. Id much prefer a logical explanation for this one other wise it's really freaky. :)
