Snake bites

In the last 3 weeks there has been 14 snake bites reported in Western Australia and one of them was fatal. Usually there are 3-4 a year so I was just wondering, why is there so many and summer hasn't even started yet?

Any snake experts who might have a theory on this?

Just to clarify, I'm not an expert  but in the last few weeks there have been alot of snake reports in my area (Southern NSW), it seems as though it might be alot more around this year than usual.

We had a fairly wet winter over here, maybe there is alot more food for them this year?

3-4 a year???

In the land, with the most poisonous and vicious snakes in the whole world, I would think that the biting-rate would be around 3-4 per minute. Some of those snakes have you dead before you even hit the ground, don't they? A rattlesnake at least have the "courtesy" to leave you in agony and death anxiety for a while - so you contemplate death. A Inland Taipan have you dead in the middle of two steps, and in the middle of your exclamation of Oh (and) sh|t.

Our winter hasn't been too wet and it still hasn't been hot yet but for some reason snakes came out quite early this year. My neighbour saw one end of August. Way too early for them.

EllJay, it's not that bad here. :)

There is a lot more talk about snakes and their bites down under than there are actual events if you want my opinion. Having said that, this year there has been a lot of talk about snake sightings even in Melbourne, which should be amongst the coolest parts of the continent.

I probably wouldn't be in a hurry to go trekking in the outback of W.A. this year, you seem to be having a bit of a plague of them over there.

Wasn't that about Brown Snakes, or what they are called? It has one of those "laid back" names. People are used to names like; "King-Mothertrucking-Son-Of-a-b****-kill-ya-in-a-sec-snake-from-hell" to get their attention. Calling an insanely venomous snake; Brown Snake does not get peoples attention.

Well disregarding the snakes - the effin crocs in Oz have my blood freezing all the time, and also have me wondering why the hell kids go swimming in rivers and lakes in the inland when they should bloody well know what "Satan" might be lurking beneath the surface. I think it was this early summer a teenager got croc-dinner while doing just exactly that damn stupid thing. They got the croc a few days later, and found half of the boy in its stomach. Will they ever learn? It might be hot outside, but I rather swim in my own sweat that go swimming with a croc.

Brown snakes are very venomous but quite laid back. If you leave them alone you should be ok. It's bloody tiger snakes that scare the crap out of me. They are known to chase people as they are very territorial.

And for crocs.... I think it's mostly tourists that get killed. :)
