Still Waters Posted June 20, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 20, 2014 The passenger pigeon is an odd case of extinction - it died out not centuries ago, but in 1914, within the lifetime of some people living today. Its extinction shocked the world, going from a population of billions to being hunted into extinction in a relatively short time. Once Martha, the last surviving passenger pigeon bid farewell at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, the world assumed they were gone for good, but perhaps not: The Great Passsenger Pigeon Comeback, the flagship project of genetics group Revive & Restore, aims to see to it that passenger pigeons fly among us once more. http://dailydigestne...ssenger-pigeon/
taniwha Posted June 20, 2014 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2014 How sad, if only we could locate and remove the genes of greed and stupidity within humans, extinctions would be a thing of the past. If you new not of this birds story until now, ( like me ) then you might find this also a great read.... http://www.audubonmagazine.org/articles/birds/why-passenger-pigeon-went-extinct ..."Men still live who, in their youth, remember pigeons; trees still live who, in their youth, were shaken by a living wind. But a few decades hence only the oldest oaks will remember, and at long last only the hills will know." --Aldo Leopold, "On a Monument to the Pigeon," 1947
CuriousRey Posted June 20, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 20, 2014 Cool story, I wish them success. Does anyone else see Jurassic Park in our near future? /joking
aquatus1 Posted June 20, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2014 Oh? Is this a thing again? The claims come regularly, so I'll just wait for the finished product.
