The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Well, Oblivion has finally been released for the Xbox 360 and PC, and in the few short days it has been out for it has already created a massive rift in the gaming community.

It's obviously part of the Elder Scrolls series which has had a few successful hits, most notably Morrowind. The game takes places in Cyrodiil, the capital province of Tamriel; which has become vulnerable to attack from demons, your mission is to kill them, seal the gates which are allowing the demons to flow in from Oblivion and to find the heir to the throne of the kingdom.

That, however; is just a part of it. The game has a groundbreaking new A.I. system (dubbed the Radiant A.I. System), which completely brings to life every NPC of the kingdom at an amazing level, here's a few stories (taken from posts at TeamXbox):

I was in a weapons shop. Decided to pull out my sword and start hitting stuff off the table. The tip of the sword hit the shopkeeper. She pulls out a mace and charges. I run outside, she follows. When we get outside there is a guard about 20ft away. As we are running she swings at me, hits him. He pulls out his bow and starts chasing her. Soon 4 other bow guards join in.

They get a couple of shots in and she really starts running trying to get away. She's running, 5 guards are trailing her in a single file line, with me trying to watch. Eventually they corner her at the side of a building and form a circle and start UNLOADING on her. Pulling their bows back really far and just nailing the crap out of her. This goes on for a good 20 seconds. All you hear is "thwack" dozens of times. She gives a final yell and down goes down. She looks like porcipine with all the arrows sticking out of her. As I start to loot the body, one of the guards puts away his bow, calmly looks at me, and says "Good day"

In the Imperial City, go to the docks, and you will see a pirate ship docked. If you get close to the ship and the first mate sees you, she will approach you and warn you not to get close to her ship, or she will run you through. Naturally, I took this as a challenge.

So I walked back until I was in the shadows and she quit paying attention to me. After a minute or so, her and one of the crew members got into an argument about getting some food. It was settled when one of the crew members finally said something like "Fine, I'll go get some food!" (Not exact words)

That seemed to make everyone happy, and the one that said it walked off. I stayed in the shadows waiting, and sure enough, after a couple more minutes the crew member came back. When he came back, all the other crew members and the first mate gathered around the one with the food. So I took the opportunity to sneak by them and get onto their ship. Went through the whole thing and looted what was decent (surprisingly little, although the Captain's chest had a few decent gems).

The whole looting process didn't take too long, so I figured they were still busy eating, and snuck back out. Of course, they had finished eating, and were just as surprised to see me coming out of their hold as I was to see them standing on the deck of the ship. Being that there were 5 of them and only one of me, I immediately summoned a headless zombie to keep them busy and ran like hell.

The zombie distracted 3 of them, but 2 were still chasing me. I ran towards the center of the city, where I knew there were guards. The guards saw the pirates chasing me, and started shooting the pirates with arrows, who imediately started attacking the guards in return. With me helping, the guards wasted no time in slaughtering the pirates, who I promptly looted.

The guards were a bit ticked off about the attack, and talked to each other about going on patrol. I followed them on their route, and they went right to the pirate ship. The 3 pirates who had been distracted by my zombie earlier saw me, and started attacking me. The two guards saw this, and started attacking the pirates. After the fight was over, only one guard and myself were left. So I got to loot the other 3 pirate boides, and one guard.

There are many different variations apart from the A.I. behaviour, aswell. Each time you create a new game file, the world around you will be randomly generated, meaning every player will have a unique environment to explore. There's also a full weather system, one minute it might be nice and sunny, then all of a sudden you'll see a streak of lightning, hear a slow rumble of thunder in the distance and the rain will begin to pour.

You also have lots of different guilds to join, depending on how you act in the game, you might decide to go on a murderous rampage every now and then, where you will be invited to the Dark Brotherhood guild, or if you're a thief you will be invited to the Thieves guild (as long as you're careful enough to not get caught by the guards, in which case you'll be attacked and thrown in to jail).

So; has anyone got this game yet?

Two of my friends just got it, and I'm expecting to recieve a copy later next week, absolutely amazing, I've always been an Elder Scrolls fan and this is a fitting sequel to Morrowind. I like the new factions, and the sheer size of the map is insane! I've been playing Morrowind a LONG time and still haven't been everywhere.

Just got the game yesterday.

I'm at level 5, I made a custom 'Adventurer' class, under the thief.

By the way, some people have been having a problem where the game slows down a lot and it takes a good few minutes to load areas or even to swing a sword or what ever. If it happens to you, reset the Xbox and while it is loading up, hold down 'A' tunil you see the Bethesda logo pop up, and the problem should be fixed.

Can you explain why that would work?.... sounds just like 'holding back while waiting for a game in Halo 2 will give you host' sorta statement.... mine has a frame rate issues... and it froze once I think.....but hopefully they can fix that with an update.... and I'm level 14 since last night :)

Oblivion uses a cache to store important information from the game, (that's why normally the first time you load an area it takes a while to load, but the next time it's much faster), but just like a normal computer, the information can become fragmented which slows everything down drastically; so holding down 'A' while the game loads resets the cache.

I'm pretty sure the information came from Bethesda, I'll try and find a link.

Nice, at the moment I'm only level 6; I've been doing more exploring than anything else. :D

How far have you got in the arena? I've been playing around there quite a bit, but I can not beat the second guy at all, every time I get close he just heals him self.

I haven't touched the Arena actually....doing more of the Mage Guild at the moment and discovering things in the world, what animals have you come across in you journeys?.... I think as you level up certain creatures appear more freqeuntly. Last night I was playing and it was about 10:00pm game time and I was walking towards the Covolia district...can't think of the city name... anyways... I was coming down a hill and seen two faint whitish objects... thinking it's two bandits whereing Mithril armour.... once it gets closer and into the light I see a huge minotaur bearing down on me.... I backed up almost the whole way back shoooting arrows and fireballs at him... took awhile but I got him...

Oops eh :).... did you find your horse or buy him?.... I've found one that didn't belong to a guard just sitting there and when I ride him he doesn't walk away when I dismount.... seems pretty loyal to me, but I haven't seen a guard yet.... so who knows.

Hod good of a PC do you need to run it though? Or are you all on the 360?

My friends got it on PC, as long as you can run Morrowind well you should be fine, it seems that Oblivion has a tendency to be choppy for a while when you first get ti thought, it just takes a bit of tweaking

I have it on the 360... most computers can hanlde it if you put the settings low enough....but it sorta defeats part of the purpose...

i found one

Did you find yours at the door to the Imperial City?...that's where mine was....but alas I did not keep him as I didn't want to take the chance of going to jail....again :)...

yeah I did actually and I just hopped on him and rode off I think you might be meant to find the horse or maybe you just have to wait for the guard to go away or something no one stopped me or said anything so I took the horse.

I think if they don't see you get on the horse you should be fine... but one time I was riding a horse and talked to a guard while mounted.... the guard was normal...but after I got back off the horse then hopped back up he ran and arrested me :w00t:

Man, I am always late on stuff. Always. I just now started playing Morrowind. I didn't think I would like the game so I never bought it. But Wal-Mart had it on sale at $10.00 so I figured...why not give it a shot?

Now I've fallen in love with that game and have to pull myself away from it begrudgingly after a couple of hours of play. I don't want to get that addicted.

Anyway, I'm betting the majority in this thread have played Morrowind, as well as the expansions (which I haven't gotten yet).

How does this new game measure up to Elder Scrolls III? I'm already reading reports that it blows everything else out of the water, but you can never tell who's writing the reviews. There are a LOT of gaming companies that employ people to do just that.

I'd like to hear it from actual players as to how they rate this game.

Scale of 1-10?
