If the SHTF in the coming months I'd like to be able to use info stored on my laptop, maybe have a lantern to read by and be able to keep a GPS charged.  Does anyone here have experience with using solar chargers for this purpose?  Can anyone suggest a good brand?

I've used regular, full-sized solar panels with great success, but have not used the "mini" ones you are likely referring to, so I have no experience on those.
Hopefully someone else here can point you into some directions.

Even if it doesn't hit the fan it doesn't hurt to get prepared to be without electric for an extended period of time.  Could just have a major ice storm.

You can get them on eBay,and they come with all the various plug adapters.
I've only used it for my cell phone,and it worked well,but I've never tried to charge a laptop or something bigger.
I am getting one of these . Sandy has inspired me to have an am fm radio in the house .

The Sugiobattery looks like da bomb!  Hope it or something like it is available soon.  I have an older hand cranked radio and it works fine but it doesn't have a light or aux ports for charging other things so I need to replace it with one like you showed.  I'm not freaking about an imminent meltdown but I honestly believe that the economic collapse could happen very suddenly and the ramifications could be very dire and lead in unexpected directions.  A little light, water and food for a few days until things are either restored or I can move my people to a safer place in the country is what I have in mind.  If nothing happens, I still live in a hurricane zone so it's not wasted effort.

Hey, nothing wrong with having some emergency power no matter where one lives.
It's a very smart thing, in my opinion.

A friend of mine keeps one (solar charger) hooked up to his boat battery during the off season and come spring it starts right up.
