Still Waters Posted July 7, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 7, 2015 A deadly python terrified locals by making a bid for freedom across a telephone wire 20ft in the air. In scenes "like a horror film" the 12ft-long pet snake escaped from it's tank before slithering upstairs and escaping from a bedroom window. Police were called after alarmed locals living in Anglesey, North Wales, reported seeing the Burmese python crawling along the wire and down a drainpipe. http://www.telegraph...phone-wire.html

Lilly Posted July 7, 2015 #3 Share Posted July 7, 2015 Deadly? Maybe if you're a rat or a bunny. Not if they get big enough. From the article: Special care is required when handling them as a three-metre long Burmese python is capable of killing a child and a five-metre long snake is capable of overpowering and killing a fully grown adult. This one was 12 feet (apx 3 meters).
StRoostifer Posted July 7, 2015 #4 Share Posted July 7, 2015 A friend had a Bermese about 6ft and it would get moody. Darn thing bit my friend once and my friend said it hurt like hell and it was considered to be rather small. Also important to note that they are constrictor's so @ 12ft they are very much a danger to people and especially if the snake is unfamiliar to those people. Wouldn't want that thing wrapped around me. Glad nobody was hurt and the snake is back in its cage safe and sound.
StRoostifer Posted July 7, 2015 #5 Share Posted July 7, 2015 I do think the title of the article was a little bit exaggerated (read: click-bait). Burmese pythons aren't known for being overly aggressive, unlike reticulated pythons. Even with wild Burmese pythons, it's rare that they would strike at someone unless they've been provoked or starved, even more rare that they would constrict them (see: http://www.usgs.gov/...ss#.VZwFIPlViko). Yes, they physically could constrict and kill someone, but a large dog also has the potential to maul someone to death. Yet I rarely see news articles describing a loose golden retriever as "deadly" unless the dog had actually attacked someone. Exaggerated and even a bit sensationalised. I see what you are talking about with dogs though and agree that like snakes, they can be dangerous when neglected abused or starved. I think its the mind set that dogs are more socially accepted as pets so to see a dog on the loose is not out of the norm but a 12' Bermese Python in an area where people are not used to seeing them on the loose is frightening and I can understand that. The Bermese was really just being a snake really. It's not like their nature is to be restricted to a cage so the snake was exploring like snakes naturally do. Maybe the snake just wanted to get some sun.

Granted a large python could kill a child, but I've handled a 14 footer and I doubt it could eat me unless I was asleep when it attacked.
