Wasn't sure where to post this, philosophy seems to be a catch all.

PETA, is hailing a victory in the signing of the new National Defense Authorization Act for 2013. Undercover footage from PETA revealed the shocking limits the Dept. of Defense would go to simulate battlefield wounds by shooting, stabbing and sawing of the legs of animals with tree trimmers.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has also lobbied to end this cruel practice for some time, and they are also hailing this as a victory.

As for the philosophic tag, well, how's this for a syllogism;

Maiming animals for combat surgery practice causes pain, suffering and death.
This practice is unnecessary; there are legitimate alternatives.
Therefore, by definition, it is animal cruelty.

My unstated assumption is; all things being equal, a world with less pain and suffering is better than a world with more pain and suffering.

PETA's limits can be rather shocking too at times.

Don't need to be abusing animals for this purpose.  It is cruel and inhuman.  This isn't the 1930's, we already know how to help the wounded.

I don't agree with everything PETA does, but then there's no organization or ideology that I am in total agreement with.

p.s. there is a link to the undercover video, but I don't feel it's necessary to post it. I'm sure people can imagine what it looks like when you take a tree trimmer to a goats leg.

Now, if the DOD could end human cruelty practices we might really be getting somewhere.

They do go to far.  I have spoke to some who think that a dog has the same value as a human life.....why not a spider, how far down to you go.  They say some good things, they make people think, but they go too far and hurt their cause.

I should have added that many advocacy groups were originally viewed as extremists; slavery abolitionists, the signatories to the U.S. Declaration of Independence, women suffragettes,  etc.
