"Perfect" Films

Given that this listing is a personal preference thing, there is a criteria I'd like all responders to follow. 1) Originality (no remakes, no book adaptations, no 'based on a true story'); 2) Intensity of Effect (includes "suspension of disbelief"); 3) Cohesion (logical progression though not necessarily linear); and 4) Complexity (no cliches, etc).

My choices:

Philadelphia

Sling Blade

Do The Right Thing

Pulp Fiction

The Empire Strikes Back

Seven

Psycho

Das Boot

Memento

Casablanca

Taxi Driver

Dog Day Afternoon

The Deer Hunter

Alien

Chinatown

2001: A Space Odyssey

Brother From Another Planet

Hmm, since you don't specify no adaptations from plays, I am going to add Brief Encounter and Blithe Spirit.

Following the rules more closely, I shall also add North by Northwest, The Ladykillers, Kind Hearts and Coronets and A Matter of Life and Death.

I'm good at breaking my own rules!

Adapted literary sources are somewhat problematic regarding this particular list. You know? Would Apocalypse Now not qualify because it's "adapted" from Heart of Darkness? Or Blade Runner because it's based (loosely) on that Philip Dick short story?

Here's another perfect film: Local Hero

The Orphanage (not too sure if that really counts)

Here's another perfect film: Local Hero

I grew up in a village just round the corner from the village that was filmed in.
