Saru Posted August 15, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2004 Lately we've been seeing an increase in the number of forum members who have enormous graphics in their signatures. This not only makes the page take ages to load on slower connections, but it can slow down some computers and is also extremely distracting. A single lined post with a page worth of signature pictures and text is way over the top. The following post details new signature guidelines to combat this problem, by restricting the size of signature images allowed on the forum. The maximum allowed signature graphic size is 500x150 pixels : The signature graphic should be no larger than 50k in size. If you're signature is within the 500x150 limit but is larger than 50k then you should convert it into a .jpg in order to reduce its file size. In future, the moderators reserve the right to remove any signature that: is larger than the above mentioned size limits contains several 'stacked' images that total in size to more than the above mentioned size limits contains links to commercial products or services is overly distracting - i.e; bright flashing images etc. contains links to illegal content, warez, pornography etc. contains more than 20 lines of text ( no image ) contains an image of the abovementioned size and more than 10 lines of text This thread will be left open to answer any questions that you may have regarding these new limitations. Note that we will also allow some time for members to make any necessary changes to their signatures to comply with the new guidelines.

LittleIrishVampiress Posted August 15, 2004 #5 Share Posted August 15, 2004 how do you convert it to a jpg?
Saru Posted August 15, 2004 Author #6 Share Posted August 15, 2004 A good program to use to convert an image to a jpg is Paint Shop Pro, a trial version of which can be downloaded for free from http://www.jasc.com. Alternatively you can ask either myself or anyone else on the forum to help you out by resizing/converting any images for you.

spidermonkey Posted August 15, 2004 #9 Share Posted August 15, 2004 Good to see something is being done about this. Personally i've turned off signatures permanently, one thing that struck me in this forum is the astounding size of everyone's sigs.

Saru Posted August 15, 2004 Author #11 Share Posted August 15, 2004 There you go LittleIrishVampiress, i've resized your Spiderman signature picture down to the right size. You'll need to limit the amount of text on there aswell to 10 lines when you get a chance. Thanks. im working on fixing them all up, maybe within a day or so As i say no rush, i going to allow plenty of time for everyone to make the necessary changes to their signatures. Saru Posted August 15, 2004 Author #13 Share Posted August 15, 2004 If it's larger than the size limit outlined in my first post, then yes it is.
Seraphina Posted August 15, 2004 #14 Share Posted August 15, 2004 question....if your sig isn't exactly 500x150, would it still be alright so long as whatever dimensions it has still come out to the same area as that, and it's still under 50k I'm quite happy with the one I have right now...but just to clarify for other people who're just too afraid of the white beared overfiend to ask

Saru Posted August 15, 2004 Author #16 Share Posted August 15, 2004 question....if your sig isn't exactly 500x150, would it still be alright so long as whatever dimensions it has still come out to the same area as that, and it's still under 50k I really want to encourage people to keep within these size limits as much as possible, any image is all right as long as it's height doesn't exceed 150, and it's length doesn't exceed 500. 350x150 for example would be fine, as would 500x100. This system is similar to the existing avatar system, where an avatar has to be within a certain size or it won't allow you to use it. 400x200 however would not be all right, because it's exceeding the limit. but just to clarify for other people who're just too afraid of the white beared overfiend to ask Now i'm sure that's not true.... *evil laugh*
Janiel Posted August 15, 2004 #17 Share Posted August 15, 2004 (edited) If it's larger than the size limit outlined in my first post, then yes it is. its 400x200 i think...\ wait no 500x167 Edited August 15, 2004 by Janiel
Seraphina Posted August 15, 2004 #18 Share Posted August 15, 2004 You know you can get the size of your sig by right clicking it dude 500x167, you're just out.
Saru Posted August 15, 2004 Author #19 Share Posted August 15, 2004 Yup that's slightly too large Janiel, plus you have an animated GIF banner underneath it aswell which exceeds the file size limit, and both of them together far exceed the size restrictions. Remember, stacking more than one image means that it's the total size of both combined you're looking at, not each one seperately. You could easily replace the 65k animated GIF with a line or two of text, which would work just as well.
Janiel Posted August 15, 2004 #20 Share Posted August 15, 2004 (edited) DAMN, well easy fix as for some of the others...not so easy...like yours sera OK that ill do Edited August 15, 2004 by Janiel
BurnSide Posted August 15, 2004 #21 Share Posted August 15, 2004 Our banners, i'm not sure, but i think they exceed the size limit. Could someone check? Not sure how.. Even if it does, both my sig and the banner will exceed i'm sure.. BLAST! I wholeheartedly agree with these limitations though.
Saru Posted August 15, 2004 Author #22 Share Posted August 15, 2004 Yeah the banner is 65k in size, at least the 486x60 animated one is. I think some sort of text slogan for the Skeptical Non-Believers of Uppity Annoyingness would make a good replacement
BurnSide Posted August 15, 2004 #23 Share Posted August 15, 2004 I think so. We'll colaberate on it. haha.
Janiel Posted August 15, 2004 #24 Share Posted August 15, 2004 one more question before i fix, what about hotlinking? does the size matter then?
Saru Posted August 16, 2004 Author #25 Share Posted August 16, 2004 what about hotlinking? does the size matter then? Yes, just because it's linked from another site, doesn't mean that the image will load faster to dial up users or be any less distracting. The same restrictions apply.
