Still Waters Posted March 22, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 22, 2012 Millipedes that glow under black lights have been discovered for the first time on Alcatraz. “There are other millipedes out there that are bioluminescent — they give off their own light,” said Bob Kimsey, an entomology professor at the University of California, Davis, who is investigating whether the fluorescent millipedes are a newly discovered subspecies of Xystocheir dissecta, a species found in the Bay Area and elsewhere.“But this is a fundamentally different thing here. Timothy Posted March 23, 2012 #4 Share Posted March 23, 2012 Do they actually give off their own light or are they just fluorescing under a black light? The article is not very clear... If they wanted to show the bioluminescence should they not have taken a photo in pitch black conditions!?
Mantis914 Posted April 26, 2013 #5 Share Posted April 26, 2013 Can't get much cooler than that! I love millipedes but this is the first time I've ever heard of them glowing. I would think that would blow their cover at night and make them an easy target for birds or other insects and animals. http://www.livescience.com/28226-glowing-millipedes-on-alcatraz.html
