Mayan calendar - world doesn't end in 2012

I think the world's gonna end pretty soon, and I base this on one silly reason: the increasing rate of access to information.

The basis for this silly idea? Well, there's a fixed amount of info one could get in one's lifetime (in my childhood, there wasn't any PC or 'net, - just reference books, and in my case an one old 1963 encyclopedia britannica referred by many in my neighborhood). and now, one can see that the quotas are exhausting pretty fast. you can easily obtain what was pretty inaccessible, say 50 years ago e.g. ...latest scientific data, and porn? LOL). All from within the relative comfort of one's home- one doesn't need to move out as well. so you have lack of exercise- which kills, and a quickly extinguishing quota of information to be gathered in this lifetime, and all put together, you have a rapidly approaching horizon, approaching at a faster rate than the ability of modern science, literature, philosophy etc to keep pushing it back.

one day the horizon will touch us, and we'll all die..... boo hoo!!

Saladin, as long as we need to work for food and other basic necessities, which most of us have to work for, a good amount of population is bound to have exercise at workplaces. It's true that technology can make many things easier, but I've not seen construction site workers for example, being replaced by robots anytime soon. Also, lack of energy to power up our ineffective farming system where animal torture is practised by big companies, will decline as oil declines. Our seas are becoming more polluted and less habitable for marine wildlife to live there, at a good rate, it drives us to reduce our fish dishes and concentrate more on farming, without oil. That farming is bound to make you exercise, even if you dont do it the traditional plow every year style, which is well worth a full gym course. Robots need something to fuel themselves to keep them going, humans are so far much more energy-efficient workers, even if they may cost a bit more in welfare countries.

And I think that internet just provides us a way to combine theories easier. 15 years ago I wouldn't have dreamed of studying all possible schools of astrology and Edgar Cayce, and all these sites with info. I can use these bits to form my own hypotheses and views, and discuss it with people who might be actually interested. This site harbors some very bright individuals, that's the impression I've gotten here. I guess I could've had a chat about these things over a pint at local joint as well, or find a group of people interested in this stuff. But this saves me the trip, and allows me to exchange thoughts without coming over to your place. I think that things will only accelerate for a while because of internet, as long as people have the will to explore the unexplored.

Im personally not worried if the world ends it ends if it doesnt it doesnt, simple as that although it does seem like every 2 seconds theres something that could happen to the earth and I mean in actuallity a meteor could hit the earth tomorrow and blow a huge chunck out of earth and end life as we know it.

I think the more "intelligent" a society becomes, the greater the tendency towards a collective extinction. Add to that accelerators like emotional insecurities, coupled with religion gone-crazy and fraudulent mind-control freaks...

Mikko-kun: As long as there's sincere effort put in- beginning with the physical, it will do well. But truly said- its idleness that kills. and to devote a massive amount of energy into brainpower without seeing anything in return is what's worrisome.

The internet has given one access to all sort of info- from the grosses/basest to the most sublime. But unfortunately we seem to be spending our time and our energy (all earned from Nature) - too much of it- into stagnant religion, indulgent sensuality, anger, greed and violence. information from the web is used to discuss how to make a dirty bomb, for instance.

We are still earth-bound! When do we expand our horizons, literally? When will we *move out*? Our earth has been a home, i feel to far more civilizations than just the humans. I have a feeling that as long as we keep crowding this beautiful planet of ours without making the physical effort, we are destined to be doomed. Once we start re-investing all the knowledge and our interpretations (like what you've said above, re: Edgar Cayce) we have some chance. We need to move out- I dunno how. From physical exercise to a civilizational breath space. A Lebensraum.

I know all this sounds like pollyanna scifi- but thats what scifi has been doing so far- encouraging one to move 'out there' be it through time, through space, through multiple dimensions, to parallel universes, to multiverses, and what-have-you.

Saladin, I think you said it well. The point is, we have too much intelligence compared to our sense of ethics and caring for one another, for every living being. To be able to respect the lives of everyone and everything, even if you take lives to survive.

You're right in that we do need exercise to keep our bodies and minds and spirits in a more refreshed state. If you think of a world where no one did anything physical apart from being at computer, it'd certainly become our doom as a species. Moving and growing muscles and vital system isn't by far the only function of physical exercise for us. Bodily coordination, senses, realising our thoughts to our movements (dance, fighting etc).

To be fair, I think their astrological calendars and texts went a bit deeper than our modern listing of Sunday to Saturdays in meaning.

Only, true, but our astrology goes FAR deeper than theirs, because due to internet and whatnot we have the possibilities to combine all the old knowledge and add it to current intuitions of whoever choose to study them. Plus our current math system should be more efficient to count any effects, although when it comes to astrology you can easily deal with basic math.

I would assume ending a cycle at a certin year means a great change is to come in that year not the end of the world. Also, no mater if its the year 2012 or 2220 each year will have a great impact on human history, which the Maya understood this line of thinking thus making their calenders cycles. Thus also helping with farming and other needs that a calender provids.

We all know the world doesn't end, but we also know that **** could still hit the fan in many ways. There's been a gradual increase in global tensions over the past couple of years, things may get real interesting towards this winter, and next year.
