I have said repeatedly now that they smoothed these knobs, some completely, the others partially.


Meaning: they protruded much further out than before.

.. not critical info  but,   I've heard of Aluminum electrical wiring in residences .  (now banned because although it could conduct it wasn't very efficient and so had a tendency to overheat)
