"Ghost" Photo?

Ok here is the story. A few days ago my mom of mine went on a historical/Halloween tour of our town. And one of the sites they went to was a very old (1800's) graveyard. Well she is a person that loves to take photographs of pretty much everything. Well in this image she took a picture of some decorations in the graveyard. When she showed me the picture I was very skeptical. Mainly because I have never seen anything like it, especially with all those different colors of lines. I thought it might have been one of those little jokes maybe the tour guide played on those unsuspecting people since it is in fact getting close to Halloween. Also I also thought it could have been maybe a malfunction with the digital camera she took the pictures with or maybe a reflection from the iron gate in the background, but the friend with her took the same picture but there was nothing in the image. BTW the white ghost in the background is the decoration :P And you can also see a person standing in the upper left behind the gate. Need some opinions on what this is...the image has not been tampered with(photoshopped) or anything.

Hmm, I have seen something similar to this when i did a controled experiment but not to this nature. Maybe one or two twirley lines but in this picture you have multiple and of different colors. Some would suggest that some of it could be hair close to the camera lens, lights in the background with a bit of motion of the camera, something to do with reflection. However, you show this picture to someone like ghostweb and they will assume its a lot of supercharged orbs. Cant really tell you but from what i just explained, nice picture though.

It's a busy colourful photo and very vivid :o - but I'm going with the hair theory.

Clearly the proof we have all been looking for, and i can see the ghostly figure in the center perfectly clear, Amazing....

hmm just noticed something...if is does have something to do with hair though, then why does some of the lines (blue mainly) appear to go in front and behind the posts in the iron gate?

Go out at night, put the hair in front of the lens, take a picture, you will have your very own laser show :)

Cool I am going to try that! :P I did not know hair would make an effect like that.

I pointed out some doubles which suggests movement of the camera when the photo was taken. Long exposer can also cause flying insects to appear like these trails. Just some things to consider.

This is what happens when the flash fires and gets good light on the main subject (the "ghost). Then after the flash fires and the subject is focused, the camera is moved and the various lights in the view are scribbled all over the frame. So it's a combination of the flash being used and a slow shutter speed following. I'm guessing there were several colored lights in the area to create this effect. Here's one of mine from only white lights and no flash on a main subject, I don't have any colored lights in my neighborhood but if I get a chance after work (and it's dark) I'll try to recreate the effect downtown.

Definately a issue with shutter speed settings. Very common with digital cameras, especially at night or in the dark.

Below is a pic of one of our investigators during an investigation. Note the whisps of green light that appear to be rising off his hand. Just a camera anomoly. The other pic is of one of our investigators with a light streak in front of her. What can't be seen is there's a lit candle just out of frame in the lower left.

I got a couple shots after work that are somewhat similar. I only had a few (not so colorful) lights out back and an antsy husband waiting to eat so it's not a striking match. My focal point was on a boat that was about 40 feet off, and I didn't use the flash because there were people inside and I didn't want an angry yacht owner yelling at me! :o

The difference in the light patterns are caused by the ways that different light sources emit light. Something to do with some emitting a more steady light and some having more of a pulsing light... I don't quite understand it but someone explained it here once, maybe can find it in a search.

Anyways here ya go:
