spud the mackem Posted April 13, 2013 #2 Share Posted April 13, 2013 Why don't all the "space" countries get together and make it one team, pool the info, and have an international world space project, I suppose that's asking too much.

There are benefits in not having a single International space programme. Just as cooperation can be good for some circumstances, the spirit of rivalry can be beneficial in others. Apollo would almost certainly not landed a man on the Moon by 1969 had the Cold War not been the driving force. A single space programme can also lead to compromises which are not necessary when national space agencies are allowed to pursue thier own agendas. Take a manned return to the Moon, NASA would rather go to Mars, Russia and Europe want a return to the Moon. NASA's budget is larger than that of all the other space agencies combined, thus they wield the most power. By keeping the programmes separate BOTH goals can be achieved. Agreed we gain more by having many small space agencies than a big one. That doesent mean they cant work together...look at the ISS. They kan work together and at the same time working on separate projects...

Roger that, but I guess mankind will probably never leave this solar system, without co-operation with all parties,no single space agency can afford the cost of such a project.I think its rather pointless if America goes to Mars, (ok they will be first), then Russia arrives and sets up a base, then other countries do the same.so we have little bases all over Mars, the same as Antartica perhaps, all striving to survive, why not cash in and have an international base, surely they would have a better chance of survival by pooling resources.
Tutankhaten-pasheri Posted April 14, 2013 #7 Share Posted April 14, 2013 We need competition, we love it, we work better when we have another team to beat. Technology is driven by competition, even in command economies. This is why in Soviet Union, while there were no independant industries like Ford or GM, there were design bureau set up to compete with each other. Rather artificial, but it did work with the major projects such as tanks, aircraft and space of course. Not so good at motors, fridges, TVs etc etc
