First sunrise after 40 days of darkness

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

Imagine living in darkness for 40 days a year. Now picture standing in the freezing wind, while dogs howl, waiting for the moment the sun rises - for the first time that year.

This beautiful film documents the annual sun welcoming ritual of an Inuit community in Ilulissat, northern Greenland, 120 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

I have to say I just couldn't live somewhere like that. Aside from the freezing temperatures, the isolation from the outside world, and then the darkness on top of that for a period of that time would probably send me raving mad.

The reason you couldn't are the reason that I could.

It's just something about how desolate it is.
