National Anthem 'snub' trio thrown out

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

A royalist County Durham tearoom owner told how she threw three women out after they refused to stand when the National Anthem was played.

Anita Atkinson opened Royal Teas in Stanhope in time for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and to display some of her huge collection of memorabilia.

The National Anthem is played at 15:00 BST and Ms Atkinson said she expected her customers to stand.

So when three women refused to do so, she threw them out.

Nobody should ever try to make others be patriotic! You either are or you aren't. Forcing someone to stand or making someone feel guilty for not standing for the pledge is just wrong. It should always be a personal choice.

I personally don't go to sporting events because I hate to stand for the National Anthem, and standing because you think you are supposed to has no real meaning. I don't think the Anthem belongs in sporting events anyway.......they are after all just games.......

If these three women were rude then she obviously had the right to throw them out though, but I would never set foot in this woman's tearoom.

..and I think that is the whole point - you know the National Anthem will be played at 3pm - so just avoid that time... these women appear to have been out just looking for a reason to not pay their bills...

Good on HER!! When a guest in another's home or country it is always imperative to be polite.

Men have been hanged or quartered for less.

The 3 women should be thankful they live in more forgiving times.

Such behaviour is typical of the collaborators during WW II in vichy France.

Everyone knows what happened to them when the war ended.

is it usually the custom to play the national Athem at 1500 wherever you are in Co. Durham, or just in this eccentric establishment?

I agree about it being a personal choice. That said if I was in that situation myself I would just join in and sing whatever way I felt about it. It's not worth the hassle making a fuss and it's easy enough to sing along.

I've no idea but I would guess it's just the lady being eccentric because of how patriotic she is.

This situation reminds me of times where I am out to dinner with certain people and all of a sudden someone decides that saying grace would be a good idea for everyone at the table. I don't like the presumption that everyone is religious and that saying grace is normal for all. I usually just look down and can't wait for it to be over. I think the next time this happens I will just excuse myself and leave the table for the restroom and come back when they are done. I don't like being put in awkward moments (who does).

I imagine what fellow Germans would think if this would have happened in Germany. The stance on patriotism in Germany has changed a little since the World Cup in 2006 (it is OK to hold the flag now, and it is also OK to sing along the anthem), but I assume most would clarify this woman being nuts having her nation as a substitute love.

The only people this has happened with me are my brother-in-law and his wife, but then he is a 'reader' with the church of Scotland and takes services etc., even so the first time they started to say grace at the dinner table it was unexpected although I didn't mind at all, but I think my husband felt more awkward about it.

We need to bring back treason.

Off with her head.

.. But is this like really serious? It is an off-beat, eccentric coffee bar (probably Tea bar)., it is stated quite clearly when the National Anthem will be played... i would not go there personally at this time because my family were Roundheads, but live and let live is always a great motto. It doesnt harm anyone at all.

You know, this really cracks me up when it comes to doing little things for your country. The Pledge of Allegiance, honoring the National Anthem, etc, all take a total of... what, maybe 2 or 3 minutes and you don't have the time or patience to stand for it?

Yeah, it should be a personal choice, but its also the lady's choice to not have people like that in her place of establishment...

Please......tell me how standing for the National Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance is doing something for my country? Does it solve the national debt???........or the economy???.......or any other problems Americans have?

You want to stand and be all patriotic......go for it. When the people of our country actually stand together instead of being divided maybe then I could feel patriotic......until then, I stand by what I say!

I already agreed with this and don't see why you're even bringing it up!

The point being is that this brief ceremony was prescribed as something that all Americans should identify with and come together for that brief moment but apparently that's not the case. If you expect these ceremonies to solve any problems, you'd only be kidding yourself. I guess I can never count on all Americans to stand together particularly if they feel they don't have to follow a simple 2-3 minute song or recite a verse but I do know that the majority of Americans feel more like I do. It's a good thing you're not in some place like North Korea where people get locked up for not saying a blessing to a mural of the dictator, there's no choice in the matter...

I didn't see that you agreed with that statement that's why I was bringing it up, but I'm guessing from your words that you would rather I suppress my opinions...

You said "You know, this really cracks me up when it comes to doing little things for your country." So please explain what it is I'm doing for my country when I stand and recite these pledges......and please, not the North Korea thing again. It's becoming a cliche.

Read the last sentence of my post #5.......you know......the one you replied to.

I don't, nor have I ever wished for anyone's opinion to be suppressed!

Nation pride starts with having pride in oneself

Thats why they wont stand for the national anthem because they dont value themselves as Americans.

If he did it in my local they would kill him for sure !!!

I dont like Charles because he sleeps with his Butlers, talks to plants and likes women that look like horses. The others I have full respect for and like but he needs a PR job.
