Northeast Snow Storm

I mean it. Sry I dont really pay attention to Northeast that much. I mean isn't it just a typical snow storm? How bad is this snow storm? The stupid news media is making it sound like The Day after Tomarrow :tu: . Its just a snow storm. Someone enlighten me plz. Maybe a perspective from someone who lives in the No East. Snow is suppose to be cool right? Like let your sons and daughters play in it. The bad side is you gotta brush the snow off your driveway and walkway.

I live in CT.

The big deal is that this is supposed to be a blizzard with 16" of snow and wind gusts to 60 mph.

This will disrupt travel, bring power outages and be a general PIA.

I hate snow. I was enjoying the unusually mild winter up until now!

BTW, the snow is just starting to fall here in Groton, CT. (home of the Boomers)

Here we go...

Oh yeah, also, the salt they put down on the roads is really tough on cars. Causes corrosion. Though not so bad in recent years, the cars are much more resistant.

Well, for one, I can't even see to the end of my driveway, so forget going anywhere. Since I have a very long driveway it will take hours (even with a snow blower) to clear this mess. Since I live out in the country if I lose power, I also lose the ability to pump water from my well (want to flush the facilities?...good luck). Heat won't be too bad as I have bottled gas for that. As for the hot cocoa...no power, no hot cocoa, my stove is electric. If I suddenly don't post anything for a couple of days, you'll know that my power is gone. Yep, real fun stuff here!

I must admit Florida is very nice most of the time...it's just the hurricanes I'm afraid of! I guess there's just no perfect place when you really think about it!

I live in New York City

Snow here stops EVERYTHING, nothing can move. The media is making a big deal about it because winter was being so mild and then this appeared out of nowhere.

It was snowing all afternoon yesterday and I'd thought, OK I'll go to bed and when I get up it will have stopped -well, it hasn't. This sucks.

:D Cute sig Lilly!

I live on the SE coast of CT where they were forecasting 12"-18" of the stuff. It's noon and so far all I see is about 4".

I hate when they hype the weather, but glad at the no show snow.

Soul...

The media needs something to talk about. For some reason, snowfall is one of those things that are hyped to death by the news, especially local stations. Here in Eastern PA, we have some of the most ludicrous media around.

I still have no idea why they issue all these warnings, or what they mean or could mean (Heavy Snow Warning, Winter Storm Watch, Winter Storm Warning, Winter Weather Advisory, etc...). They're fairly meaningless, as people can simply look out and see it's snowing like a banshee, and elect to stay home, which they should.

I was looking at some program last night, and the local news kept flashing these red banners accross the screen...like a civil defense warning or something! I'm thinking, "Uh Oh, are we being attacked by terrorists? Has a toxic chemical spill happened? Is it an amber alert for some kid being kidnapped?"... No, they were posting snowfall totals for various towns in the area (3" here, 4" there, 2" some other place...)! Who cares?!

It always amazes me the fear they instill in people when a snowfall is forecast, and the attendant response of the masses. People flock, quite literally into grocery stores, stocking up on things like bread, milk, and toilet paper so they can weather the storm (I saw a woman frantically running her full shopping cart to her car, and she had all that stuff (most of which will go in the trash because it will spoil long before anyone could use it), plus about 4 of those big 12 roll packs of toilet paper...a clear indication that people are completely full of #@$* when it comes to snow...

Now, it's Sunday at about 1:00 PM, and the snow has long since moved off, the roads are plowed, and folks are shoveling. No one is stranded (as they almost never are), and everything is fine.

I thought for sure thousands would be dead, and the world would've ended. I do have to shovel 5 foot drifts (there was alot of wind), but there was only about 1/4 to 1/2" of water that fell during the course of this "storm", and it was very light and fluffy stuff. Couldn't be more than 8-10" of the stuff in reality, which is insignificant, really.

Up in the far northeast, blizzard conditions existed for a time I'm sure, as the low off the coast spooled up and poured moisture in (it probably still is in some places up there). That too is somewhat typical in places like MA, CT, RI, and ME. But they know how to manage this stuff.

Snow is not a big deal. It's white, sometimes it's deep, and it needs to be dealt with. But the fear and loathing that go along with it is largely media-induced, and it's ridiculous in the extreme.

Even in the blizzared of '96, where we in my area got around 30" of wind driven fluff, no one died, no one was "stranded", and, after the state cleared the roads the following day (and prohibited people from going out...the wisest decision I've seen in years), everything was back to normal.

It can be inconvenient, sure...for a day maybe, but the majority of the hatred of snow I feel is media induced. It was just winter, snow, wind, some power outages (me included..., big deal)and some plowing and shoveling, and several days from now, most of it will be melted, and no one will think about it again.

It amazes me that people turn their TVs on and watch the "continuing coverage" of the snow all night too. What's to "cover"? Look out the window and you see about all that you need to know. People also don't see the obvious.

How can it be as "bad" as these nit-wits that are out there "covering" it are saying? After all, they're all over the place, driving around in this mess, telling us we're gonna die if we go out...yet there they are, standing there in a dozen various snow covered places, seemingly none the worse for wear.

Yea, it's all utterly silly.

It seems like its letting up now.

I dread going outside but it looks like there's at least 2 feet on the ground.

yay. A whole week of NYC's famous brown slush!

We got about 18 inches here in NJ -- good exercise shoveling out.

I always laugh at these new reporters hanging out at Home Depot interviewing people who are buying shovels. How come people have to run out and buy shovels every time it snows? Don't they keep the shovel from one time to the next?

And the stocking up thing too... everyone will starve to death if they don't have milk, bread, and eggs for 2 days. Jeesh.

I read in an article that it costs NYC one million dollars per inch for snow removal.

I think we averaged about 12-13 inches in Eatern PA...of course it was drifted all over the place to depths of up to 4 feet....but 24 hours ago there wasn't hardly anything on the ground, and now, the roads are clear, and it's all been removed, and no one's dead from it (sore perhaps from all that shoveling).

I wonder if the people who flocked to the stores, or the folks who interview all these shovel buyers ever get the fact that they've made fools of themselves once again...all over some frozen water falling from the sky...

I think perhaps it's exploiting the fear mentality that has been consistently cultivated by governments and the media in concert, since 2001. Now instead of "Code Orange" day, with respect to terrestrial terror threats, we need worry about the terror in our atmosphere as well.

And movies like, " The Day After Tomorrow" (um, as in; "Later"? ) did a great deal to influence persons imagining the science fit's the paranoia! :geek:

Speaking of the seeding of Noia (as in paranoia); Look for someone to correlate this "un-natural" weather pattern of late, to the axis shift of our planet during last years(2005) Indian Ocean quake.

Axis Shift
