Odd dream recently......

I had another dream recently of my Dad it was a rather odd one. It kind of skipped a little from place to place and was a pretty short dream. In RL my Dad has passed away though from time to time he'll appear in my dreams randomly. This dream stood out.

It started with me in my parent's friend's house (that I have never been to or met in RL nor did they ever have a friend like those in the dream) we were watching t.v when a news bulletin came across the t.v. It stated saying that the president had passed a law that brought back the draft into the military and that they were to start drafting immediately. We were all shocked at this point the bulletin then said that we were going to war (I didn't catch the country we were warring with). It then skips ahead we are at my parent's house. I knew my husband wouldn't be picked since he had already served so I wasn't nervous about leaving since I knew he'd take care of the kids. My mom didn't have to go, but my Dad had to since it was a one from every household type of deal with the draft. We all three decided to go into the Air Force since if we signed up before our names were called we could pick which branch to go into. I remember feeling more nervous that we were leaving my mom then anything it stuck with me throughout the rest of the dream. From there it again skips forward. We are traveling in the back of a military truck in a pretty desolate place where an Air Force base was located and where we were to be stationed at. The land scape had scrub grass a few small trees (not many) and patches of sand here and there along with a sandy trail road that we were on towards the base. I remember looking at my brother and Dad then out the back of the truck. It was a pretty sobering and sad feeling as we continued to travel. As I said before though the feeling of leaving my mom behind was still there.

Any thoughts on this dream?

Disclaimer: I don't interpret other people's dreams, but some dream motifs and characters are dreamt by many, many people, and I sometimes recognize those motifs and characters. I can tell you what several of the people who have dreamt dreams like yours have thought about their dreams, but only you can decide whether that has anything to do with your personal dream.

Ok, I think the motif is plain enough:

We are traveling in the back of a military truck in a pretty desolate place where an Air Force base was located and where we were to be stationed at. The land scape had scrub grass a few small trees (not many) and patches of sand here and there along with a sandy trail road that we were on towards the base. I remember looking at my brother and Dad then out the back of the truck. It was a pretty sobering and sad feeling as we continued to travel. As I said before though the feeling of leaving my mom behind was still there.

That's the The Waste Land. The motif is named for T.S. Eliot's poem, and for his inspiration, the decline of Arthur's kingdom late in his reign. Of course, The Waste Land is a searchable term, and it's easy to get some sense of what it's about. Although those are the sources of the name, the motif by whatever name is found in many other works of art and literature, and also in many dreams.

You have dreamt the truly classic Waste Land, where civil collapse precipitates your venture there. I have no idea why you're dreaming this motif, or where your father fits in.

All I can do, apart from pointing you towards familiarizing (or refamiliarizing) yourself with the literary Waste Lands, is to suggest what I would do if it were my dream.

The part that "sticks out" is this:

We all three decided to go into the Air Force since if we signed up before our names were called we could pick which branch to go into.

It's not really part of the motif, and someone's "name being called" is such an obvious euphemism for dying. We all have (constrained) choices until "our name is called," that is, while we're alive. For example, your father did. You and the other family memebrs you mentioned still do.

I would begin my search for the unraveling there, with what sticks out. But you're the one who has the necessary facts to work with.

I hope there's some food for thought in that.

I think I kind of understand. I have some ideas as to what may have "helped" this dream along. Thanks for you thoughts on the dream. Like I have said this was a really odd one for me I think because I have never dreamed of the military (and that I was being forced into it was a whole other ball of wax) at all in my life it just stuck out.

If anyone has any other thought on my dream please go ahead and post, thanks.
