NEW ORLEANS — A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else.

I don't know about that. I bet you'd have a hard time finding many people on here who agree with the pastor. I know that I don't. And I've been called a racist many times on here.

What's sad though is that this pastor probably is a very nice man. That's just his way of thinking. As probably was for many many generations before him. But America is becoming more tolerant of interracial marriages and his way of thinking is slowly dying out.

If I remember right, the law was on the books in Louisiana until either 1996 or 2000 prohibiting interracial marriage.

Personally, I couldn't care less. If someone gets lucky enough to love someone that loves them then, who cares what race they are? With divorce rates as high as they are, is the ethnic background really an issue?

As for me, I'm a mutt to start with. I'm German, Creek Indian, Dutch, Yiddish and who knows what else. If I went to a segregated swimming pool, I guess I could dangle one foot in the water... it'd be my luck it would be the foot that I lost last summer though.
