EVP and 35 students

The problem with the human brain is that it can play many a trick on its host. Speech in the human animal is of course another problem especially when EVP is involved.

I shall explain, lets say that you are in a market place in Greece and you speak no Greek at all. You will hear voices but you will have not meaning to the sound that you hear. When the brain recognises a speech pattern it immediately searches for a meaning to the sound. For example, let us take the senario of the three deaf old ladies sitting on a park bench:

1st old lady: My isnt it windy!

2nd old lady: No its Thursday

3rd old lady: So am I lets go get a cup of tea!

The brain places a next best fit to what it thinks it is hearing.

Human speech comprises of nothing but sounds that we recode in our brains with a meaning placed to it, if there is no meaning, then basically it remains just a sound.

Another important aspect of speech is the way in which it is measured: Vowel sounds are low frequencies measured in MHz, for example the vowel A let us say has a low level frequency of 400MHz (these are an example i cant remember the exact number ok, but it is an illustrative point) A consonant has a very high frequency and is very short, that is why a vowel can be sung and a consonant cannot.

During speech, a consonant can be recognised by the brain as a short but high frequency

During speech a vowel is recognised as a low frequency with a longer duration.

In EVP: Sounds that are not recognised by the brain will be placed as a next best fit from our memory.

During 1999 35 students of various ages and sexes were offered a chance to record ghostly voices by EVP. They were split into two groups and left alone in two different parts of the building that was supposidly haunted. Each group had two recording devices.

The 1st group (group a) were told that the room in which they were in was haunted by a mad woman that had killed many people, she hated people staying at the building because she did not like visitors and that in the past she had given warnings to guests. Basdically the student were told she was a right nasty bit of work.

Group b was in contrast were told that the room in which they were staying was haunted by a kind woman that loved guests and was said to give friendly messages such as you are welcome and other such tripe!

The outcome: the next evening the groups were gathered and the recordings were listened to. Group a: Reports of a voice saying "get out" and "I will kill you"

Group b: reports of a voice saying: "Nice visit" and Lovely day"

My recording device herralded nothing, every student had a listen to my recording but could not say that they could put meaning to any of the noise on the tape.

I wonder why that is?
