SUDAN REJECTS DEADLINE

Sudan's army has called the UN Security Council resolution giving it 30 days to resolve its Darfur crisis "a declaration of war".

It says it will fight any foreign intervention in the region.

"The Security Council resolution about the Darfur issue is a declaration of war on the Sudan and its people," said armed forces spokesman General Mohamed Beshir Suleiman.

"The Sudanese army is now prepared to confront the enemies of the Sudan on land, sea and air," he added.

Up to 50,000 people have died and more than a million left homeless after a campaign of terror in the west of Sudan.

Arab militias called the Janjaweed have launched a series of attacks on civilians.

The Sudan government has been accused of complicity in the violence - a charge it rejects.

After initially rejecting the UN ultimatum, Sudan has now said it will discuss the terms again at a cabinet meeting.

The UN Security Council resolution gave Sudan 30 days to disarm the Arab militia.

It threatened economic and diplomatic sanctions if the government failed to comply.

The 90-day programme, agreed in July, allows for 6,000 Sudanese soldiers and policemen to be deployed in the Darfur region.

It also stipulates that humanitarian aid and human rights monitors be allowed into the area.
