To have little is to possess.
To have plenty is to be perplexed.

I was only playing devil's advocate, no pun intended...
And of course an organized government could ban organized religion; if they can ban drugs, they can for sure ban religion, as religion is the 'opiate of the people'.
And yes, this man has needed some help long before this act happened. He just probably was a shy/quiet man and nobody really noticed anything until he committed this act.
Religion doesn't turn people into crazy lunatics, just as drugs don't turn people into crazy lunatics. The craziness was already there, and the religion/ the drug helped push them to where they would have gone already.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you have a problem with the ban on psychoactive substances. Now I agree with your perspective, especially considering most religions resulted from the use of psychoactive substances (including christianity), but it really doesn't pertain to the current discussion.
This man clearly had a serious mental illness, I'm guessing paranoid schizophrenia. Yes schizophrenics are often attracted to religion, and yes religion causes a lot of problems and should probably just go away, but a mentally stable person would not rip out their eyes no matter how religious they are.
OK I'm confused this is suppose to be a forum to discuss events that might be more than they seem on the surface. E.G- cryptids, haunting and guys ripping their eyes out in church! Most of the discussion seems to be a anti- religion message (if so, you may be happier on a forum for that) or and attempt to write a witty comments (if so whatever). What about the possibility that there may be something preternatural about what happened to this guy. He said he was hearing voices maybe he's just unbalanced or maybe something else was happening. One person made a joke about demonic possession, I'm saying that's not a bad theory (although unsupported). Well what do all of you think. Although if it was possession I am confused about what the purpose of having him mutilate himself in a church would be, If their is an agenda I do not see it.
