SRT Synergy

If you know the definition of a term it is much easier to understand the concept it defines. "Synergy" is an important term when considered in relation to the SRT.

When the assets of a Special response team are totaled, the sum is greater than the assets of each individual considered separately.  In short the team in its totality is greater than each member acting independently.  Synergy is present in many areas.  A flock of geese winging on its way assists in defining the term.

When you see a flock of geese heading south for the winter, soaring along in a “V” formation, you might find it interesting to know what science has discovered about why they fly that way.  Scientists have found that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following.  By flying in a “V” formation, the entire flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.

(A team sharing a common goal or purpose can accomplish it quicker and easier, because the members are traveling on the thrust and uplift of one another.)

Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone.  Quickly, it gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front.

A Goose has no sense of competition, no need to prove it is faster or smarter than its fellows.  When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point.  The geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Finally, when a goose gets sick, or is wounded by gun shot, it  falls out, and two geese fall out of formation and follow it down to give help and protection.  The “support” geese stay with the injured goose until it is either able to fly or is dead.  Afterwards they launch out on their own or join another formation to catch up with their own group.

It requires the sense of a goose for a team member to support and stand by other members  like this.
