Part Ape, Part Human: A new ancestor emerges

Still Waters

Lee Berger is standing in a death trap, smiling. It is a hole in the ground about 25 miles northwest of Johannesburg, in a ridged brown valley where herds of giraffes occasionally parade between stands of trees. The red-rock walls of the pit are higher than Berger's head, and steep enough in spots to make a scramble up, or down, rather daunting. Some two million years ago, the hole was a great deal deeper, with no possibility of escape for any creature that fell in. This accounts for the trove of fossils Berger is finding, which in turn accounts for his upbeat mood. He leans over a red boulder near the pit bottom, tracing a white-colored protrusion with his fingers. "It looks like part of an arm," he says. "That means we've found another individual."

The article is published in the current edition of nationalgeograph's magazine which is August 2011 issue. As with a lot of other magazines, they are dated ahead.

Now you've spoiled all the fun.

Btw, I think I saw another post here, before your last one.

Damn, I must really be getting old.

Sorry. Humans are not Apes. We may share about 95% of DNA with chimpanzee.

Humans have 46 chromosomes, while chimpanzees have 48 chromosomes.

Well, it tends to become a bit confusing...

Here is a screenshot from the Wiki page you linked to:

Humans_apes.jpg

So all hominoidea are apes, *but* humans? Thats just silly.

I've come across a few biology sources that refer to humans as apes and/or great apes.

No, you interpret it wrong: according to the screenshot I posted, both humans AND apes are hominoids, but humans are not apes; that's why the apes are marked by a bracket.

Anyway, that's what I said: it's confusing.

In other words the diagram is showing all hominoideas (except humans) are apes. In what way am I misinterpreting it? Edited by Rlyeh

This, from the National Academy of Sciences, might clear up any questions you may have or leave you with even more questions, LOL..

Maybe I read it wrong.

Anyway, I don't care if we descend from Godzilla.

Humans and apes have the same ancestor.

I can't help it if you don't like the nomenclature and classification; blame the scientists, register an account with Wiki, and edit the page.

Personally I am quite convinced we are nothing more than naked apes with big brains and an ego to match.

I disagree with you but people like us have been having this debate for quite sometime now. I guess we can agree to disagree, LOL.

So you are the one who thinks we are something 'special', like Ravinar suggested.

Well, we are special, in the way that we are special apes, hairless, big-brained, intelligent and arrogant (and with the religions we created ourselves to confirm we are something special).

Maybe we look similar but we are indeed different in make-up.---- http://www.cs.unc.edu/~plaisted/ce/apes.html

Sorry, I'm not religious.

No need to explain. Everyone has their own path my friend. Have a good day.
