Frank Merton Posted February 21, 2013 #26 Share Posted February 21, 2013 A big rock was about to kill a million or so people, and one presumes they being so smart went ahead and blew it up, knowing there was nothing we could do. But since they want to keep their cover they made it look very different. Hey -- don't make me defend this rigorously -- I was just playing a game. Rafterman Posted February 21, 2013 #27 Share Posted February 21, 2013 Actually that's probably the least far-fetched part of this whole nonsense, after all a sufficiently powerful laser or particle beam weapon could hit an asteroid even at those speeds. But was the USS Enterprise in orbit at the time and tracking said meteor......

Shiloh17 Posted February 22, 2013 #30 Share Posted February 22, 2013 These rocks whether iron or other composition are roughly at -273 Celcius or -454 Farhenheit, basically the same temperature of space itself after billions of years of floating around. When they start to rapidly heat upon entering the atmosphere, you are going to see explosive breakups just as witnessed. No missile was needed for that sized rock, and a missile wouldn't dent larger ones.
