Time Walk

By: Richard Schubert

One day somewhere on Earth, there lived a 9 year old boy named Max who’s imagination was more wild than other boys his age. His best friend was an imaginary Tyrannosaurus rex named Trevor. One day Max’s class from school took a field trip to the local Museum. The Museum was full of all kinds of stuff. Max was getting bored. “This museum is stupid, where are all the dinosaurs?” said Max grumpily. All of a sudden a large Stegosaurus skeleton was coming up along with other dinosaurs. But while falling behind the rest of the class, Max saw a strange looking cloaked man walking around the corner. Max and Trevor both where puzzled and decided to wander off away from the rest of his class and follow the strange man. They kept following him until they wandered far from Max’s class in the “U.S. History” section and that’s where it caught his eye. It was a large wax statue of an old man sitting at desk. Max looked down at the information slab and it said “Don’t believe your eyes”

“Don‘t believe your eyes?” Max questioned

“ Perhaps this isn’t real?” said Trevor

Max wondered and he took a step forward, to Max’s surprise he went right through the exhibit. Inside they saw something that they never thought they’d find in a museum. They were inside a large underground cave filled with large shiny gems, and crystals. “Whoa!” shouted them both.

It was lit by the blue glow of the gems and crystals lining walls. They walked farther into the cave, down a long hallway of many different things, spears, arrowheads and cave drawings. “Max where are you??!!” Max heard people yelling.

The more they walked; they realized that all they saw was a timeline of Human history. “Max where are you??!! “ Max heard it again.

Up in the next chamber, Civil War cannons and soldiers in the walls. But out of nowhere emerged the “cloaked man” a large man with a moon for a head. Dressed in a long red cloak that when he spread his arms the lining appeared to be the universe. He stood over them and said hello.

He told Max that this is his home where he watches over earth and her inhabitants and that he has seen other worlds like this one and he’s watched over them all until it’s time was up. Max was confused but continued to listen, until he saw something that caught his attention. “Hey look, that’s our home town Trevor?” Max said eagerly pointing at a map on the stone wall.

“Yes… I don’t know why but I feel something important will happen here in the near future” the man said

More objects where coming up in the cave, all types of futuristic things and then, nothing on earth at all, just empty cities and forests. It’s as if people left Earth completely.

Max just then saw a faint red glow out of the corner of his eye at the end of the cave. They got closer and saw that it was a door. The glow was coming from behind it. The door had no doorknob, and no keyhole.

“What’s this?” Max asked

“This is the future Max” Said the man.

“Max! Max where are you?!”.

“Max I think that’s your teacher calling”

“Well wait what’s behind it?”

“I cant say, for not even I know what it is but it mustn’t be opened now, it must be open at the right time”

“MAX! Where are you??!!!”

“Here this will lead you back to where you came” he said pointing at a little crawlway. Max and Trevor both crawled through as fast as they could. They finally made it back out. They were in the middle of the hallway.

Max looked back to Trevor but he wasn’t there.

“Max there you are! Don’t ever wonder off alone like that again, where have you been?! I’ve been calling you for ten minutes” his teacher hissed at him. Max apologized and was eager to tell his teacher what he had saw, as the other students snickered and giggled at his story. “Max, stop making things up. The point is that you wandered off and you were not supposed to. But thank goodness you’re safe. His teacher said relieved. Max rejoined the class and was quiet the rest of the trip thinking at what he saw. As the class headed back to the bus, Max looked back and saw the cloaked man standing. “That was weird wasn’t it?” said a voice

Max looked over his shoulder and saw Trevor sitting next to him.

“Trevor where’d you go?”

For years to come, the door at the end of the cave will be all Max can think of. Every now and then Max goes back to the museum but the exhibit has been moved. Guess Max will still be wondering what was behind the door. All he can do now is use his imagination.
