Godzilla opening smashes competition.

I went Saturday. I enjoyed it a lot - good Summertime entertainment on the big screen. I wasn't much of a Godzilla fan in my youth but this was a stylishly done modern version and I really liked it! Welcome back Simbi!

Awesome. Haven't seen it yet but plan to, Godzilla was probably my favorite movie monster growing up. What I like about this kind of news is that it means more movies like this are going to be made.

It was a little skimpy on screen time for the big guy, and there were a couple of unanswered questions regarding the human story line, but it was good overall. Far superior to the New York adventure.

I think the sparsing out of Big G, was tastefully done.

It actually sort of paid homage to the Japanese classics of him, leaving the big fight scene at the end, for the fun.

I thought showing the fight scenes on TV, in lieu of the actual event, a great way to do it.

Thanks and then... I never really left, I've just been preoccupied with other things as of late.

Glad you liked it. Some of the reviews have been ridiculous, but you know how it goes.

No one is ever happy. If there had been more fights and godzilla, it would have been gratuitous monsters reviews. Blah blah

Go go go!

He's magnificent! Look for the Easter eggs too. There are references to Mothra a few times.

Gareth only had Toho permission for Godzilla, but we are hoping they will now let him use other classic godzilla foes

EXCLUSIVE: After opening to $103M internationally — the biggest opening of 2014 so far — and grossing $93M domestic stateside this weekend, it should come as no surprise that Legendary Pictures andWarner Bros.‘ are already developing a sequel to the monster hit. It was confirmed to Deadline this morning that a Godzilla sequel is underway. The beast is currently stomping across international markets to take No. 1 spots in most territories.

/\

The link I posted up there is about the sequel btw.

I work at a movie theater so I tend to hear alot of reviews from people as they leave a movie.

I honestly have not heard one person not recommend seeing this movie yet.

I saw it and it was a very strong movie. I'd probably see it again.

At one point I was telling my buddy... "What? No radioactive fire?" and then within seconds.... RADIOACTIVE FIRE BREATH!!! Yeah!

I thought G could have had a little more screen time too. Too much focus on the Lieutenant.

My favorite line?.... "Let them fight."

It sure does pay homage to the old movies. loved it would recommend it to any one.

It was very realistic in the "how would humans cope" thing. which is what the originals kind of went for.

Let me guess, all tweens who come for every fast and furious and Transformers movie?

Anyone on this thread who's seen it, seems to recommend it, but hey, go with the strangers at the theater.

He was magnificent. My friend and I squealed and applauded for that part, and we're both over 40.

I found his demeanor more like Gamera however. Quite interesting.

Here's my summary:

If anyone wants to go and see it, make sure that you are charged for only the 10 minutes or so Godzilla is actually in the film. Seriously, didn't people learn from the mistakes Pacific Rim made (besides the acting, the casting, and most of the story)? Less humans, more monsters. I didn't want to see the Notebook with stuff happening in the background. I wanted monster on monster action, and got very little of it, and what I did get wasn't very satisfying at all--too much slow motion fighting concealed by too much building and city debris. NOT good decisions made by the director and producers.

I'm not really recommending it. I'm glad I got to see it for free, because it's not worth it to sit through 2 hours of expressionless close ups while that actor watches the action instead of just showing the action to the actual audience. Or having your best actor killed early on, then your second best actor who is only there because they needed a token Japanese character stand around with his mouth open for the rest of the movie, occasionally sputtering a weak line or two, and reminding everyone that all Japanese in giant monster movies had a relative at Hiroshima.

Don't get me started on the stupid decisions the movie-military makes.

It wasn't a bad movie, just be prepared for as little Godzilla as possible in a movie titled "Godzilla". I hear that a sequel is planned; honestly, I am looking forward to it ONLY if they address the issues with this first movie. It could have been much, much better, it had so much potential.

My favourite line was the first time Serizawa uttered ....... Godzilla.... in that strong accent :D Cracked me up - just a classic line from the good old days :D Saw it with my son Monday night.

The Blue breath was wicked - waited till the last second didn't he!

For anybody who thinks there is too little Godzilla action in this film, there are a number of Showa era films on Netflix right now. I suggest watching them without the nostalgia goggles and pay attention to just how the action scenes are put together and there duration. Overall the problem wasn't lack of Godzilla, it was simply that our human characters were relatively uninteresting compared to the more seasoned cast. At the very least they weren't totally irritating like the '98 flick, or any character from a Transformers movie.

No, there is a lack Godzilla. And that's not even comparing it to the old movies. I have them on Netflix. I watch them. The human characters were uninteresting in all Godzilla movies, for the most part (aside from those necessary to further the plot), and in the new film and there was too much of them. And I'm not comparing this to the Transformers movies. This Godzilla movie is golden Oscar material compared to those things. I could go on for pages about the new Transformer movies if I thought they were worth the effort.

While I stated that there was only 10 minutes or so of Godzilla (and I stand by that, even though I'm probably off by a few minutes either way--it's an approximation--the root of the complaint isn't really the duration of Godzilla, but the overall lack of focus on Godzilla as the main subject matter of the movie. Too much focus on the humans left for a rather drawn-out and boring film. What if the Avenges movie constituted a couple of police officers on the ground during the fighting with the occasional flash of Thor or Hulk or Cap fighting on a nearby TV? There would have been a riot in theatres across the US.

Come to think of it, maybe Joss Whedon should have been in control of Godzilla. He seems to have a clue as to what people want to see when they go to the movies.

I think I came into this new movie wide-eyed and not looking at it through some concocted filter. Fanbois wear nostalgia goggles, and because of that, they won't find any faults in the movie at all. Which is fine, and their right. But I expected a little bit more than I was offered and given. Maybe I should have put the goggles on, but I'm too old for blind faith anymore.

I think the film struck a good balance. All in all I'd rather have the amount of Godzilla shown (granted 5 more minutes would have been fine) than what most people seem to be expecting: a solid hour of disaster porn. Maybe its my personal film philosophy of "less is more" but I'd rather come out of a theater wanting more ( even if more would be a bad thing) than coming out drained like Pacific Rim, which I liked, but think it works as a stand alone film, a sequel would probably be more of the same unless they took it in a completely different direction. Same will probably go for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the first film I loved, though that was pretty much do to nostalgia and appreciation for the sheer effort that went into setting it up (not that it isn't a well made film, but it has some issues).

Do I think Godzilla is a perfect film, no. Like I said, it's leads were pretty damn boring, but the atmosphere the world set up kept me in it. Maybe I went into this with different expectations than you did, I'd expected that the thing would go more in the direction of a thriller, with a large amount of build up, rather than a straight action movie. I actually like that direction better, otherwise it's Pacific Rim with Godzilla, which is something we don't need especially considering we have a confirmed sequel coming, the franchise really needs to establish it's own identity.

Fair enough. Good post. However, I tend to want action in my action movies. And I didn't get enough out of Godzilla. Maybe the sequel will make good with that. I am looking forward to it, even if the first one wasn't fulfilling. BTW, I think there were too much human stuff going on in Pacific Rim, as well. Action movies need 2/3 action, 1/3 non-action. To me, that's a good balance. I pay for action, special affects--the whole roller coaster--when I go to see a movie on a giant screen with a surround sound that thumps my chest when it can. I don't do talky movies. Those I can watch on my little TV at home, for free.
