Lucid dreaming is when you become aware that you are dreaming. Once this awereness occur, you can then attempt to 'control' what you are doing in the dream, being fully conscious of your actions. It happened to me twice so far and it is something special.. It usually last about 30 secs - 1 min and then it fades away into a 'normal', typical dreaming state. But there are techniques and practices that can be attempted (with various degree of success) to try to purposedly induce lucid dreaming and maintain it for long periods of time.

As for astral projection, it really depend of your belief system. Some people think that dreams are in fact astral travels.. Others believe that dreams are your inner world of consciouness and that astral projections is actually something different, a journey or the astral body (or consciousness) beyond oneself.

I can suggest you some book titles to expand of these concepts:

- Journey Out Of The Body by Robert Monroe (1992)

- Far Journeys by Robert Monroe (1992)

- Exploring The World Of Lucid Dreaming by Stephen Laberge and Howard Rheinhold (1991)

- Lucid Dreaming: Gateway To The Inner Self by Robert Waggoner (2008)

I agree with sam... To my understanding, lucid dreaming is exactly what it sounds like- being lucid while you are dreaming. You are aware that you are dreaming while in the dream.

Astral projection may differ depending on belief- but it is not part of the awareness while dreaming experience. It's projecting outside one's self.

I have experienced two lucid dreams so far, both of which where I became aware of myself in my garden.

I don't remember too much about it now, apart from thinking to myself I must be dead, because everything around me seemed to be dimly lit in a kind of twilight darkness, and I couldn't move very easily, more in a kind of sluggish way I guess is the best way to describe it.

It wasn't soon after thinking I must be dead, that I suddenly realised I must be in a dream and it was me who was in this dream.

I should have made written notes about those two lucid dreams at the time, because I'm sure there were other things I noticed in those dreams which I have forgotten about now.

I was meditating when I experienced these two lucid dreams, and during the meditation, I became aware of the same starting process I experience when I start having an OBE. That's the buzzing in my ears, floating sensation and body vibrations.

So did I have two OBE's or were they lucid dreams, who knows.

After regaining consciousness with my eyes still closed, I had the most incredible blissfull feeling flowing through my body, which lasted for quite a while afterwards. :)

I'm not too sure if awake is the right term- again, it depends on the belief on what projecting is. Some consider a meditative state not really awake or sleeping/dreaming. After all, dreaming happens while deeply sleeping. And deeply meditating isn't quite awake and fully aware of surroundings.

But I do know for sure that being deeply asleep and dreaming/lucid dreaming- all in ones mind- is something different than whatever ones take on projecting is. If nothing else, projecting is leaving ones self, while dreaming is all in ones head.

It is probably no coincidence that my experiences of lucid dreaming came a few months after starting to practice mindfulness meditation. So it clearly seems to me that there is a correlation between meditation and lucid dreaming. If meditation can help you work on your visualization, mindfulness and awareness while you are awake and benefit from it, I don't see why it shouldn't have some impact while you are asleep as well.

I must admit, I don't really put much effort into having lucid dreams, I'm just happy to go with the flow so to speak, and just let it happen when it does.

I can't remember having any lucid dreams when I'm asleep, although I do seem to have some very vivid dreams sometimes, which seem to be too real in their content to be just ordinary dreams.

I will also add that in my meditation I can go into a trance, which I believe is the state I'm in when I experience visions and lucid dreams.

Astral projection is when you are aware that you are dreaming (or aware that you are in a state that you know that it's not the reality) from the very start. Noticing that you just wake up from your bed.

Lucid dreaming is occur usually when you are between a dream, and you suddenly realize that you are dreaming. It could be a lower state of consciousness : you know that you are dreaming but you don't have much control of your action; you follow your will.

Whereas in AP you feel fully awake, sometime it's hard to tell if you are in the reality or in the dream world, unless you did a reality check.

Beware, AP is scarier!!
