thefinalfrontier Posted January 20, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 20, 2009 New Research Shows that Wasps can Form Long-term Memories You already know that wasps are nasty, purposeless agents of Satan. You might know that certain species of wasp implant their young in the eggs of other species, paralyzing and eating the unborn victim from the inside out (and if you didn't, we apologise for making your world a measurably worse place by telling you). What you definitely didn't know, though, is that some wasps can not only eat infants - they can plan it in advance. Dr Ties Huigens and researchers in Wageningen University have shown that Trichogramma Evanescens wasps can form long term memories for planning baby-murder campaigns. In case you're wondering why the nations of Earth haven't united to launch a speciecial self-defence war against thsee intelligent wasps, it's because the wasps are only half a millimeter big. And only target insects like butterflies. With a short lifecycle and a considerable distance to travel (everything looks pretty big when you're only five hundred microns tall), the mini-wasps can memorise the scent of a mated female butterfly which will produce eggs. This saves them from wasting hours chasing something of the wrong gender, a problem shared by clients of the world's more modern nightclubs. The research shows relatively high-level mental function in an extremely small amount of brain matter, raising hopes that pattern-recognition and basic survival skills could eventually be programmed into modern pop stars. The most interesting question raised by the study, however, is "Is Dr Ties Huigens being watched by any security agencies?" Because that's a man who looked at a tiny race of baby-eaters and thought "I want to know how they think!"
