Diaries Reveal How Much Wartime Germans Knew

Newly published diaries by a Nazi-era court official document details that others conveniently ignored. While many Germans would later claim they knew nothing of Nazi crimes, Friedrich Kellner's critical observations show that such information was available.

Now THAT is a find! The, "I didn't know what was going on," trope has been shown to be a deliberate falsification - they didn't know because they didn't want to ADMIT they knew... like turning your back on a crime so you didn't have to admit to anyone that a crime was committed - all while you hear the sounds of it behind you.

Wow!!

I think 99% of the state knew and were fully up for it.

I also think if Hitler reappeared they'd all get the swastika flags out of their attics.

You do know that, by the majority, Hitler is as hated by the people of Germany as anyone else, right?

Sadly I think he is. Which shows a lack of understanding about Germany.

Anyway interesting stuff overall. Always neat to get a look at what regular people thought of major historical events.

I do wish people could discuss Hitler's legacy without getting emotional. He took a totally economically and spiritually destroyed nation and rebuilt it within just a couple of years into a world powerhouse. He was BRILLIANT!

Yes, he was also ultimately evil - but I wish people could admit and applaud his legitimate accomplishments. Never forget how he ended up, but don't gloss over his good deeds.

They likely will in a century or two. The evil deeds are still too fresh for a fully objective look at all of Hitler's deeds.

Could you tell me what was so brilliant about Hitler, besides his ability to carry out his sick plan to control Europe and whipe everyone out he considered "weak"?

There are not many "accomplishments" that stay in our memories because there were almost none. He built the Autobahn, but those weren't his very own plans. Medical science made a huge leap under his reign, thanks to those prison inmates who "volunteered" for testing. He managed to bring the unenployment rate down to almost 0%, by having the unemployed work in ammunition factories, or by simply locking them away/killing them.

How can you consider that brilliance?

A guy I knew once defended Hitler on several counts suggesting that economically he was a good leader for the German people. I just raised an eyebrow looked at him and said "Yeah, stealing businesses, goods, money, land, and homes from several million people then exterminating them does tend to leave a few open jobs slots and make for a less downtrodden economy all right." Hitler was good at economics, and he did save the German economy for a while. Problem is how he accomplished it all. Over the graves of millions of people.

In public yes but behind closed doors can you be so sure?

All those flags must have gone somewhere!

Hitler was the greatest leader in history.

Darwins Theory of Evolution still stands. People might not like that their genetics determine who they are and society isnt ready to revisit this but one day they will have too.

Then all the rubbish about Hitler in the history books will have to be rewritten.

How can you be so sure we would still be Nazis?

Most flags went where they belong - the trash. Seriously, it has been almost 70 years since the fall of Nazi-Germany. There are just very few survivors left from that time, and they were most likely kids back then. If you would have brought this up in the 60s/70s, you might have a point, but all veteran Nazis are most likely dead by now, and the Neo-Nazi issue is a whole new problem. Do you know any Germans?

And you think those Germans you know are secretly Nazis?

More liberal? Germany is a free democracy, and very multicultural.

If it's behind closed doors, how can you say they are Nazis? Or is your policy to assume everyone is a Nazi unless you monitor them 24/7

I think I can also safely say I know more Germans than you will and better too.

All those flags must have gone somewhere!

Germany has one of the best waste management systems in Europe. I suggest you look into it.
