Yup.  Love Harry Potter.  I also love Nancy Drew, Wind in the Willows, Where the Wild Things Are, Chron. of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, etc.

:)  I have even read all of Anne Rice.  Stephen King too.

Read Gone with the Wind when I was eight and spoke with a HORRIBLE southern drawl for months.

I don't remember any of my favorites when a teen or pre-teen implying that it was ok to use people and be a doormat cuz sum doods 2 cute!!

(Ok, to be fair, the first Anne Rice I read was her umm...fairy tale rewrites.  She doesn't write for young girls.  Stephen King because I lived near him when I was young and it's damn near a law there.  :) Now I just like to escape and read something that doesn't require thinking.)

The only really negative thing I'll say about King is that he does tend to...  'Recycle' concepts.  And not in the crossover-one-universe kind of way.  (More of a Koontz fan anyway.  XD)

Personally I don't think Bella is meant to be a character, just an empty shell that the reader placed themselves in.

As for Harry Potter I'm not a big fan. Never read any of the books but the movies are enjoyable. I think a lot of it is silly (serious how is that school still open with the amount of deadly thing around it?) but overall it's not sending out any really bad messages. Plus those books actual have a plot and characters.

Good thing I don't pretend to be religious! Phew. Also, I'm glad that's all it takes to get into Heaven, just putting the pen and paper down and all. I won't have to worry. I mean, after all, it's not out there for anyone to see or judge me by. Ohluls.

Anyway, nah. Once I'm set against an author, for whatever reason, I refuse to support them in any way. No matter how simple the issue I have with them, I'm done with them. :/ Hypocrisy is one of my biggest... I'll have to call it a hate, because there's no other way I feel about it. I hate hypocrisy.

I love the accent while I'm actually in the south, but once you leave the south... it's awful. D: You suddenly because an uneducated hobo and the only thing people can do is talk to you real slow and ask, "You live in Kentucky, huh? That place with all the horses?" Exactly. There's that (because that is the real goal of Bella's character, I think), and the fact that Meyer is simply an empty shell herself. :P

HP can get really silly, but I love the silliness of it. But I think that aspect of it is purposeful, because there are a lot of moments like that, where the characters (Dumbledore in particular) just shrugs it off. All of the things that seem exceptionally weird to Muggles (like Fluffy, the basilisk, Prof, Lupin being a werewolf, dragons in the Tri-Wizard Tournament, etc) are all really normal things in the wizarding world. I think that's expressed more in the books, though, than in the movies. But that's definitely one of the things I like about it, how it's so abnormally ridiculous, and none (okay, very few) of the characters care about it.

I got attacked for my accent once.  Seriously.  Somebody heard me talking and assumed I'm a rifle-swinging gay-hater racist southerner.  All I could do was sit back and go 'WTF? o_o'  The last time I fired a real gun my age was still in single digits, I'm BI, and I was in a relationship with a black woman for a year.  I'm such a rifle-swinging gay-hating racist.  >_>

I think the Twilight saga is so popular because it's pure escapism! Alos, looking at Edward's character - he's portrayed as some sort of perfect man, he's strong, protective, loving and very attractive. As people have already stated, Bella is simply an empty shell for the reader to place themselves in, for a while they can escape to something a little dark and exciting and feel the way Bella and Edward do.

I actually think that Meyer has an excellent way of making the reader fall for Edward and for the Romance of it. Remembering of course that the books are aimed at young adults, and many of this age group would not sit down and read the classics. Perhaps Twilight could be seen as a way of getting people who wouldn't usually read into it? And thats always good!

Ttly!

But the really sad thing about it though is, there are too many people who are actually like that. x( I hate it. I've never had anything like that happen to me before, but I am seriously afraid of talking while I'm out of state. :/ We went on a two-week-turned-four-week vacation out west/northwest/southwest, and oh lord, I had never been so scared to talk to other people in my life.

The last gun I had was a BB gun when I was little, rofl. I admit though I was pretty good with it, I always felt big and bad when I went to go shoot pop cans off the fence post.

Well.  Fluffy, the Basilisk, a werewolf teacher, and the dragons were odd and dangerous, even to the wizarding world.  Hagrid was proud of Fluffy 'cus of how rare he(?) was.  The basilisk nearly got the school shut down out of fear of it.  Parents were worried about their children being in a room with a werewolf.  And the dragons were a deadly challenge - the possible death of the contestants really came into focus on that one.  Almost everything that happened in the HP series was outrageous, unheard of, odd and dangerous even in the wizarding world.
The key thing isn't really that everyone was passe about them, but that the story focused on characters that had the bravery (Or in some cases, sheer GALL,) to meet them and deal with them.
And of course Dumbledore shrugged them off.  He's the Dumbledore.  :P

They were odd and dangerous, true that, but they weren't treated like... Inferi, or acromantula. Fluffy could be tamed, the basilisk... well, okay, that one was a really bad example. Fluffy was probably the least odd/dangerous of the lot, especially if he was kept in a room sealed with a spell that first years knew.  Lupin, eh. He was still allowed to remain a student, and his friends weren't bothered by it. As for him being a werewolf in general, no one was really concerned (except some parents). Dumbledore, crazy though he is, did allow him to teach at the school.

Dragons were probably next in the line of "most dangerous things Harry has ever faced during a normal day at Hogwarts", no one was up in arms about them as a task, I don't even remember anything in the book about people being all, "OMG NOOO DRAGONSSS!!!!!!" They were just like, "Oh wow. Dragons. That's awful Harry, don't die." The Minister of Magic was even there during the task, and he didn't seem at all opposed to it. Though, the Tournament overall was pretty normal for the wizarding world. It happens every four years, but that particular year Hogwarts had been chosen to host it. Not to mention Norbert, but then again that's probably another bad example.

ANYWAY. I shouldn't have mentioned the biggest...ugliest things. Should have stuck to things like blast-ended skrewts and unicorns, or Arnold the pygmy puff.

Is it that Firefox doesn't underline "Hogwarts" as being misspelled?

Speaking of misspelled, I just realized I wrote Bertie Botts as Bernie Botts. Oh lol.

I just got back from Hastings and there was a mom and teen daughter there looking for some book called The Girl Got Game.  The guy laughed when they told him the title as if the book sucks.  The mom says it's for her son and he laughed again.  Then the girl says "Well he likes Twilight, so he likes good books too" or something to that effect.  Made me laugh.

If these girls actually do ditch Twilight and go on to read other books then yes at least something good has come from it. Though personally don't see how Meyer does a good job of making the reader fall for Edward. First from the quotes I've read it's nothing more than he's hot and strong and perfect in every way. His only flaw is how completely perfectly hot he is. Second...the guy is a creepy stalker who any clear thinking woman would call the cops on! Edward promises not to kill a girl and they fall in love with him. I promoise not to kill a girl and I get maced. Where's the justice?! ;)

That's my biggest problem with the series. That it's putting forward that Bella and Edward have the perfect relationship, when in reality they would both be horrible people who would have the cops at their house every other day.

Harry Potter! :D

Great stories...love the books, not to wrapped in the movies lately but oh well. I love how J.K Rowling weaves lots of little subplots into the main plot itself! She is a clever woman, and far more talented then Meyer, there is no comparing IMO Rowling flogs her A***! I was a late bloomer though, didn't read the first HP book till I was eleven. In fact as a kid I hated reading, but my teacher in primary forced us all too read, and I got hooked on the "Goosebumps" series LMAO! That's what got me started lol.

I do like Anne Rice...her writing can be a little annoying at times, but she still is much better then Meyer there is no comparison. A lot better in fact...but admittedly I've only read the first three Vampire books, Interview with the vampire, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the damned. I have those three and have read them a lot luls. My fave though is definitely The Vampire lestat, I loved being in that characters head lol.

Yes people who read twilight might go and read the classics she mentioned, but I fear they won't appreciate them. :hmm:

I tried to the finish the first book.,.. but It was too teenieboppish for me! I like the comfortable overcast in the movie but the characters werent given any background to the story. Anne Rice is good like that she can jump from character and time and still explain the depth and background in each character.

The movie seemed a little too Degrassi for me! It was okay when I was 12!

There wasnt enough blood and guts and Edward could do with a good feed! If I hear Bella say,"I need you" one more time....  Erk. How the hell can you need the wolf in any way shape or form compaired to the moody vampire?? Okay acting but the character Bella, itself was disrespectful. You do or you dont! Bleh!! ;)= ;)= ;)= It was a good movie because of the special effects!
Taylor RAWWWKS! Love in the movies is overrated although shown exceptionally well!
I tell ya what they had better bring out the good stuff in the third movie!!
