Secret to raising well behaved teens? Maximize their zzzzz's

While American pediatricians warn sleep deprivation can stack the deck against teenagers, a new study reveals youth’s irritability and laziness aren’t down to attitude problems but lack of sleep. This paper exposes the negative consequences of sleep deprivation caused by early school bells, and shows that altering education times not only perks up teens’ mood, but also enhances learning and health.

It's not easy to be different when you're a kid, this can be hard for them if their buddies stay up late with their smartphones and computers or on the streets. Teaching them how to endure being individuals and helping them notice the benefits of it can solve a lot of things, if you can do that.

Now I know why going to sleep early when I was a teenager was so hard and why I wanted to sleep late.

I can recall being sent to bed at a set time as a kid. I'd lie awake for hours sometimes... bored out of my skull. (there were no 'gadgets' and most of my day would have been spent playing football)

Now I know why going to sleep early when I was a teenager was so hard and why I wanted to sleep late.

But research indiacates that no matter how early you go to bed, the highly-valued REMs are more intense in the morning, and the REM times don't change with bedtime. It is not a changable issue. If they sleep later in the morning, they are better behaved. Lots of reseach on this. Susan Mednick, if you want to google her. EurekAlert has quite a few studies that indicate that later school start times, later wake times, have a massively positive effect on teens.

I think this applies to adults too. People who get up early are in greater danger of being a-holes. I'm so glad I can go to work a little later now...

My PC crashed before I finished my post. Am surprised it did at all. lol

I was going to add that I never had trouble getting up in the morning though. (Unless I was in charge of the alarm clock)

And I was gonna ask, did anyone else have real trouble sleeping at their parent-controlled bedtime? Anyone else read with a torch for an hour or two?

I am about readxy to fire the public schools and teach him myself. I already fired the school lunch program, not because of the food, but because they didn't let me pay the way I wanted to pay (Fired them outright!!). Then he really CAN sleep in in the morning.
