After leaving South Africa in shame England's World Cup flops suffered one last indignity last night as it emerged they had had personal items stolen by hotel staff.

Five cleaners have been jailed for three years after stealing items worth £7,000 from the players - including underwear - police have confirmed.

Detectives were called to investigate on Saturday after Football Association bosses made a complaint about a string of thefts at the five star Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus near Rustenburg in South Africa.

Officials said cleaning staff had rifled through the players' bedrooms and taken items including team jerseys, underwear and money.

Around £485 in cash was stolen, as well as a Fifa gold medal and several USA team strips which the players had been given after playing the Americans in their opening World Cup match.
