kill_them_all533 Posted January 4, 2005 #1 Share Posted January 4, 2005 fliping through tv channels i found a very intereting documentery about religion and what caught my attention was the part where it was stated that most believers live longer than non and that maybe religion the belief of a higher power was a built-in mechinism for humen survival or sumthing. might explain alot... wut do you think? whoa182 Posted January 4, 2005 #2 Share Posted January 4, 2005 Could be because the majority of people are religious and believe?
Axle13 Posted January 4, 2005 #3 Share Posted January 4, 2005 I've heard similar studies, but one of the common explanations is that a belief in God or some other similar higher power helps reduce stress, which can wear down the body.

Whether of not there is a God, a belief in it definitely influences our mind and body to some degree.
seeking Posted January 4, 2005 #5 Share Posted January 4, 2005 i highly doubt that because you believe in god you will live longer, i tend to agree about the majority of the world are believers which is why the numbers are so high in that field

I don't think it has any relation to believing in god. Most of the Nazi war criminals lived to their 90s (if they weren't cought earlier ), and most of them were atheists. I think it has to do with the way you live your life. Religious people, and I mean really spiritual people, usually eat right and are much more relaxed then the average person, because religion can give you inner peace. It figures that them eating right and living relaxed life will make them live longer. Same goes for those top Nazi criminals - part of the Nazi ideology was the worship of human phyisical perfection and aspiring to reach such a status (they believed themselves to be superhumans after all ). This caused them to do sport most of their lives, to not put up weight, and to take care of themselves. Figure you'll live longer if you do sport, eat right and take care of yourself. If we will all take care of ourselves, be a bit more relaxed, eat right and do excersize each day, we will all live up to a much older age than if we won't do those things. phawkins Posted January 4, 2005 #9 Share Posted January 4, 2005 I am in the process of finding God. But I find all religions to have contradictions and even peaceful religions have brutal non peaceful backgrounds. Maybe the built in God is not physical, what if God or the guidance of human evolution is lead by the smallest of things. Maybe consciousness and belief is a virus? Which explains why some people believe and some do not.
Bizeebutt Posted January 4, 2005 #10 Share Posted January 4, 2005 Buddhists are not "believers" in god, but they live very very long lives. I think it can be more aptly generalized as ... ... a STRESS FREE life leads to a long life.

Athenian Posted January 4, 2005 #12 Share Posted January 4, 2005 Spirituality can teach you how to be happy and ideal. Happiness is needed for survival. You will never get anywhere if you are always sad, worried, or demoralized like most people today...
Seraphina Posted January 4, 2005 #13 Share Posted January 4, 2005 I agree....probably down to stress. Despite the common belief among some Christians on this site that athiests "take the easy way out, making themselves not answerable to anyone", I think the opposite is actually true...athiests make themselves self-regulators of their lives, as opposed to religious people, to tend to thrust that responsibility on God. I'm not a stressed person personaly....in fact I'm dangerously easy going But I think I'm the exception to the rule in that regard.
Bizeebutt Posted January 4, 2005 #14 Share Posted January 4, 2005 (edited) Ditto... stress free here too!! Life is too short to worry about things that won't affect me a week or a year from now!! Edited January 4, 2005 by Bizeebutt
Neosypher Posted January 4, 2005 #15 Share Posted January 4, 2005 Or maybe this is because........religious people dont drink? or doesn't take drugs?
Seraphina Posted January 4, 2005 #16 Share Posted January 4, 2005 ....Religious people are just as likely to drink and take drugs are athiests ....I'm sorry, but when did "athiest" suddenly become a word for "alcholic smack head"? I don't drink...and I've never taken drugs...and none of my athiest friends do....there goes that theory

Athenian Posted January 4, 2005 #18 Share Posted January 4, 2005 (edited) Or maybe this is because........religious people dont drink? or doesn't take drugs? 436093[/snapback] A part of being religious is to resist these things of course... Even though there are still plenty of religious people who have become corrupt from such material substances. It is just another factor involved. Hahaha... my grandma is the biggest wino you'll ever meet, and claims to be a very good Catholic. Theory debunked:) Being religious and being a Catholic are 2 different things... Just because one claims to be a Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindew, Bhuddist etc... does not mean they are religious. Wine was the only healthy drink then that could kill off bacteria. That is why Jesus turned water into wine. Of course Jesus drank wine. That does not mean he was an alcoholic.
