CuriousRey Posted June 23, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 23, 2014 So the title is pretty self explanatory, i'm looking for your favorite sci-fi series and movies so that maybe I can find a gem I haven't seen yet! I'll start. Just a few of my favorites Battlestar Galactica (the new one) I realllly loved Stargate Universe, such a shame it got canned Firefly and Stargate Atlantis, just to new a few series Some movies that I love; Serenity Pandorum Pitch Black... the other riddick movies aren't bad either Ok enough from me, tell me what you like!

Taun Posted June 23, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 23, 2014 I like all of them that you listed (except for Battlestar - didn't like the new "PC" version)... I would add: Series: The Prisoner (A BBC series about a British Spy who is "retired" to an island and continually questioned... He just never finds out what they want... Star Trek (TOS)... Blakes Seven The Time Tunnel (Not bad for it's day - I'm sure it would seem pretty bad today) The Invaders (about not nice UFO's that invade the planet, and the only guy that can see them) UFO The old Flash Gordon serials (I know they're cheesy.. .I just like them) Movies: John Carter The Day the Earth Stood Still (The original, not the recent mess) Silent Running Alien Aliens Movies I wish they would make (or are planning) The Honor Harrington books (by David Weber) (In production with the first one - should be out next year) Starship Troopers (by Robert Heinlein) (done like the book, not that horrid mess that came out a few years back) Hammers Slammers (by David Drake) (A mercenary Armored unit in the far future) Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen (by H. Beam Piper) (A Pennsylvania State Trooper is accidentally transposed to an alternate timeline Space Viking (Also by Piper) Glory Road (by Heinlein)

I still haven't seen it, though I must admit it looked interesting. Aww, i'm sad that you didn't like the new battlestar, I thought it was fantastic, the acting was on point and I loved how it played like a mystery as to who the cylons were. Not to mention starbuck, I love her for some reason, and the blonde cyclon Mmmhmmm. I actually liked starship troopers! In a comedic sense it was brilliant IMO. Taun Posted June 23, 2014 #6 Share Posted June 23, 2014 John Carter was a really good movie, that had crappy marketing and was bashed because it was "derivative"... The only problem being that John Carter was written in 1912... Everything that it was "derivative of"... Was derivative of it! Starship Troopers, was done by a director that really wanted to do a World War II movie but was told not to by the studio... So he made a "Nazi's In Space" movie out of a really, really good book... Every fan of the book that I've talked to hated the movie... If they had changed the names, and the title I might have thought better of it... But it was a slap in the face to a book I have always loved...

I'll have to check out John Carter then, my father reccomended it to me some time ago I just haven't taken the time to check it out for some reason. Having not read the book I really enjoyed it, though I can see how someone who has read the book would be frustrated by it's butchering. I've had other instances of such atrocity!

StarMountainKid Posted June 23, 2014 #11 Share Posted June 23, 2014 Just about all of the above, though I avoided some of the TV series mentioned. 'Eerie Indiana' was an interesting TV series. 'Metropollis' movie. 'The Thing' movie (both versions) Some of the old 1950s science fiction movies were fun to watch, especially 'Them' and 'Invaders from Mars' (the original version) 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (original) And of course 'Plan 9 From Outer Space'

CuriousRey Posted June 23, 2014 Author #13 Share Posted June 23, 2014 So, question, is Dr. Who worth catching up on the last umpteenth seasons so I know what is going on? I have a friend who was absolutely obsessed with the series, even went as far as having the tardis tattoo'd on his arm!

EllJay Posted June 23, 2014 #17 Share Posted June 23, 2014 Farscape is my No1 show, by far. It was a real tragedy when they canceled it. But it got at least 4 long seasons and a full movie to tie up the whole series. I haven't seen any other series even coming close to the makeup and masks like of the different species on this show. Here is just a tiny sample of the long list of different characters, species. http://youtu.be/mDI8INt0uIo http://youtu.be/hdkronaiMDI

StarMountainKid Posted June 24, 2014 #22 Share Posted June 24, 2014 How about 'Kolchak:The Night Stalker'? It's kind of sci-fi, a good TV series anyway. 'Tom Corbet Space Cadet' 1950s TV series. 'Space Patrol' another 1950s TV series. I used to watch both when I was a kid. 'Captain Video and His Video Rangers' 1950s TV series, of course. 'Science Fiction Theater' old TV series. 'One Step Beyond' old TV series. 'Tales of Tomorrow' 1950s TV series, which was sort of an early Twilight Zone. All these are still as watchable as reading early sci-fi adventure novels. Just for fun.
