New Age Claims Various Lives

This story really unsettled me, and brought me back to reality in a sense really questioning the new age movement all over again... not to mention the image of the new age MAYAN guru who made people commit mass suicide because it was somehow the end of the world and here we still are...and various other cult suicides...sent chills up my spine making me wonder and question the validity of the NAM all over again.

When I first read the story of how Karen/Ari was all but "wiped away" from the Abe forum after she killed herself, and particularly after I read about the Jody birthday appreciation rampage, I immediately thought of another tragedy that also took place in 2009. I recalled how James Arthur "Death" Ray and his minions worked so hard to cover up Colleen Conaway's death after she (apparently) jumped off of a third-floor mall balcony during one of Ray's Harmonic Wealth weekends in San Diego in July of 2009 -- less than three months before the fatal sweat lodge in Sedona. Many of you who are reading this probably know the basics of Colleen's story, but it bears repeating in this context. (For those who are interested, Salty Droid wrote of the tragedy of Colleen in detail over the course of numerous posts.) One of Ray's minions, Greg Hartle, actually witnessed Colleen's fatal leap from across the mall, and instead of calling 911 he simply tweeted: “Just witnessed a woman jump several stories down onto pure concrete. I gotta say it was disturbing. I’m sending her my love right now.

So many people want to believe in someone. People going into a sweat lodge forthe 1st time need to be checked by a real docotor 1st. I have been though many sweat lodges. I know when i have had enough and leave. Colleen might have discovered something about James Ray and one of his followers might have helped her jump. Just a theory ofcouse.

It is not the new age movement or any movement that is at fault really. It is the gullible who are willing to believe anything just because a so-called "leader" spews out some esoteric garbage.

Thank you for your insightful comments on my forum topics, I agree with you that it is NOT ONE CULT, but that the new age comprises of various sects... I just write it as "cult" as a general term for all the sects and cults together... Since its doctrines and beliefs are used for cultlike purposes in anyway, calling the NAM a cult or cultlike seemed pretty feasible to me. Furthermore I agree on the subject "let those who want to be deceived be deceived" yet I cannot get my head around the fact that the NAM and all its little separate sects (cults) feed on the weak and vulnerable... These people get hurt by mainstream society and seek to find solace in the unconventional only to be exploited and used further by people with the same basic mindsets and attitudes as the traditional social paradigms they fled from in the first place. Also not that I see myself as a Christian, but this came to mind "aren't we keepers of the covenant?" Shouldn't we reach out to those who are being misled? I don't adhere to any religion, and strictly spiritually speaking, if I see someone suffer believing lies, lies that used to hurt me in the same way, my conscience and empathetic resonance would seek to HELP individuals in that same situation where I once found myself.

Hmm..sometimes people are not very receptive if you go out with the mindset of trying to "save" them...it would be like a fundamentalist christian going out trying to "save" you because he feels you are being misled.

It would seem that for the most part people need to find their own way, provided they aren't in immediate danger. I mean, having discussions is one thing and warning people of the potential dangers of any belief system but I guess people just need to discover for themselves.

I guess what i am trying to say is that it is not up to us to decide who can believe what...trust me, I am getting a bit of this from my father and since he decided to become a Lutheran he now feels that this path is the right way and anyone who doesn't believe in anythng, like I do, is just misguided, brain shrunken and stupid. (his words basically)

LMAO... I can assure you my need to help does NOT stem from any religious conviction, only pure LOGIC and rational observations made on the whole NAM thing, and what I experienced and the BS they tried to shove down my throat while my rational mind was screaming the entire time "this is so wrong, something is NOT right with this nor the people involved in this" and I sought rational reasons as to why I felt this way, and it finally made sense why I can't be part of any religious or spiritual DOGMA.. And well it is more like math than art.

Jim Jones was another new age god, teaching you are your own god, there is no god that will save you but yourself... his cult saw him as God or the new Jesus Christ, they all committed suicide at his command, 900 people dead...

It is all good and well to say that Jim Jones, David Koresh etc. were being led by the Devil, but the fact is, that if we didn't have religion, we wouldn't have these nut jobs pretending to be something special, and eqully stupid nut jobs following them.
