Hi :)

Quick question, when viewing somebody's profile, if you click on the "rate me" thingy, how does it exactly work.

I have clicked on a few member's "rate me", it then says something about uploading or updating, however, the rating does not change. Does it need a certain number of votes or is there a glitch?

I would think that the rating is averaged, so if you rate someone that has already been rated 100 times you will have very little individual effect. If, however, you are only the first person to rate a new member then their star rating will reflect that.

I don't like it...it's like one big popularity contest.

Not that I care or anything...not that it bothers me that the first person to vote for me gave me 1 star *kicks a rock* <_<

While trying to explain the unexplained, one should not worry in the least how others perceive them on the internet.

It's alright to have fun and talk with friends on here, as well as debate on these subjects that this forum provides.

The member personal ratings provide valuable feedback. It's not always easy to tell when you're hated just based on your posts being ignored and threads you respond to dying. After all, that could just be general lack of interest in the subject. It's not even straightforward when people make cryptic comments at you, leaving you to wonder why they said "wolf in sheep's clothing"? And in general people can't be bothered to tell you why they object to your posts or you personally, that would involve too much courage to speak up. So in the end, all there is is knowing that a lot of people who wish to remain anonymous took the trouble to rate you and give you a meager 1 star ...

A couple of negative views there on the member ratings, they were originally enabled as a test run to see what everyone thought of them as they came built in to the Invision Board software.

Now that we've had them for quite a while what does everyone else think, would you like the member profile ratings to stay or would you prefer if they were removed ?

The truth is always good, even when it hurts to know that I'm not even as good as nothing.

There's no control for erasing the vote against you, so I'll be off now.

Mel, please don't pay too much attention to what rating someone has left you, ratings should be taken with a pinch of salt because at the end of the day they are essentially meaningless and not something to be taken seriously.

I know that :) a popularity rating is meaningless in a vacuum.

While I was a bit disappointed the rating I've gotten, it's not the rating systems fault. That underlying condition is something I've been picking up on before I noticed my personal rating. The rating just made it official, instead of my having to wonder what it all meant.

Great point, Saruman. You shouldn't care what other people think about you.

But rate me, really. I'm RAWESOME

Some stats that speak for themselves:

Number of profiles rated 2 stars or above: 1200

Number of 5 star profiles: 653

Number of 5 star profiles with zero posts: 91

Personally, I'd vote to remove them. I don't see that they add any particular benefit to the site, other than give people the opportunity to vent anonymously.

ps. SaRu - The More than 0 search option in the ratings section of the members search page returns members with 0 stars, so I couldn't work out how many profiles had actually been rated :(

mhm. I have to say it makes little difference.

I think there is no reason to keep or get rid of them. The only real judge of the quality of your contribution to the board is your posts and perhaps Blog/ChatRoom activity. The star system is more or less irrelevant.

The response to your carfully thought out post is far more important then the meaningless star next to your name. I don't think there is any reason at all to keep them but at the same time there is not that big a reason to be rid of them.

Perhaps it is good to keep them for those who are sufficiently insecure to think that the number of stars rating you have really has any relation to how well you act on the site.

Just make one star vote.

The total star is your overall ratings.

Again, I'm not paying attention to the rating itself. Though I guess those should be removed, because I've found members with less than 4 posts, all of them innocuous, with negative ratings. And it's obvious that other members use them as a status symbol.

At about the same time that people rated me badly, I became instant poison for any thread I post on. If I go to any popular topic that members are actively posting in, if I post there's a 80% chance the thread will be immediately left for dead. I have people calling me a wolf in sheep's clothing and not even willing to explain themselves. I'm sick of being treated like this on every forum I go to.

On one forum that I was too stubborn to leave, everyone else did instead. But no one was ever willing to say what, if anything, was wrong with my presence.

The draw of forums is discussion, not giving one-way speeches to no one.

I'll be back one more time to deactive my account.

I think you're being paranoid to be honest, i've looked through your posts and there's nothing wrong with any of them, nor do I see any indication that any of the threads you have participated in have become inactive.

Just because nobody has responded directly to any given post doesn't make it any less valid, it is still a contribution, a part of the topic and something that people will read along with the rest of the thread.

In my opinion you are letting paranoia get the better of you, there is nothing wrong with you or your posts.

Personally, I'd vote to remove them. I don't see that they add any particular benefit to the site, other than give people the opportunity to vent anonymously.

I'm beginning to feel the same way, there seem to be a lot of reasons against and very few in favour of keeping the rating system active on the board.
